It Only Took One Hour for Canada to Issue Its First Ticket for Smoking Weed in a Car

On Wednesday recreational marijuana legalization went into effect across the great northern expanse of Canada. About an hour later, police in Winnipeg wrote their very first ticket for smoking it in a car. That was fast.

Around 1 a.m. early Wednesday morning, a ticket was issued during a traffic stop for consuming cannabis inside a vehicle, CBC reports. "An hour into legality, and something illegal," Winnipeg Police Service traffic division Insp. Gord Spado said, probably with a heavy sigh. And so a Teachable Moment was born:

It's unclear if the driver or a passenger was smoking it. But the police said it's likely the cannabis was purchased illegally. Legal sales opened online at 12:01 a.m., and there's literally no way it got delivered in time for this eager fucking beaver. The police did not pursue that line of questioning, though.

"I think that's just the education piece of our members, knowing where to go with that. It's still new to us, too, right, so we're still learning," Spado said. Expect better questioning in the future, I guess.

Drug-impaired driving is illegal in Canada, and it's up to the police to decide if you're impaired or not. The Canadian government's website makes it clear that there's no official guidance as to how much cannabis can be safely consumed before driving, unlike alcohol. Since tickets like this one carry a $672 fine, and only idiots mess around with DUIs, maybe don't risk it.
