Only two competitive races on Upton's ballot this spring. Who's running for office

UPTON — Choices will be few and far between when voters visit the polls in early May, as only a handful of offices have competitive races.

Papers for the annual town election were due last week, and many candidates are running unopposed.

A Board of Selectmen seat opened up when incumbent Stephen Matellian opted to run for a spot on the Board of Trust Fund Commissioners. David Ross and Board of Health member Laura Hebb are seeking the three-year selectmen's seat.

But the only other competitive race is for a three-year seat on the Mendon-Upton Regional School Committee, in which James Forkey takes on James Ferenczy.

All other races are either unopposed or do not have any candidates at all:

  • Town moderator (one year) - David Loeper (incumbent)

  • Board of Assessors of Taxes (three years) - Valerie Leonardo

  • Board of Assessors of Taxes (one year) - William Bonina

  • Cemetery Commission (three years) - Alfred Palladini (incumbent)

  • Cemetery Commission (one year) - Bob Pray (incumbent)

  • Board of Health (three years) - Quinn Parks

  • Board of Health (one year) - Laura Hebb

  • Recreation Commission (three years) - Laura Monachino

  • Board of Trustees of the Public Library (three three-year seats) - Debra Amorelli (incumbent), Charlotte Carr and Joseph Poirier

  • Housing Authority (three years) - Brittney Besler (incumbent)

  • Housing Authority (two years) - Charlene Williams

  • Constable (two years) - Valentin Komarovskiy

Nobody has filed paperwork to run for a five-year seat on the Planning Board or for a three-year term on the Finance Commitee.

Candidates have until April 6 to withdraw their names from the ballots.

The annual town election is on May 9.
