An Onslow County man won big this week after buying a scratch-off on his way to work.

Jamie Johnson, 45, of Hubert bought a $30 200X The Cash ticket from the Handy Mart on W B McLean Drive in Cape Carteret, according to a Friday press release from the North Carolina Education Lottery. When he scratched the ticket at work, he told his co-worker he had just won $100,000.

“He told me, ‘If that’s true, lunch is on you,'" Johnson said in the release.

Johnson said in the release that he called his wife right away to tell her the good news, and she thought he was lying at first. He had to meet up with her to show her the ticket.

Johnson arrived at lottery headquarters Friday to collect his prize and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $71,259, the release said. He said he plans to use the money to do some home repairs and help pay for his daughter’s college tuition.

The 200X The Cash game launched in March with six top prizes of $5 million and 18 $100,000 prizes, the release explained. Four $5 million prizes and eight $100,000 prizes remain to be claimed.

Ticket sales from scratch-offs make it possible for the lottery to raise $2.5 million a day on average for education. For details on how $12.1 million raised by the lottery made a difference in Onslow County last year, visit www.nclottery.com and click on the “Impact” section.
