Oops! Virgin Voyages cruise ship hits pier in Miami

A Virgin Voyages cruise ship hit a pier in Miami over the weekend.

The line’s Scarlet Lady vessel “experienced some strong currents” while docking at PortMiami early Sunday morning, and its stern made contact with the pier, according to a Virgin Voyages spokesperson. The incident caused minor cosmetic damage to the ship.

“Repair crews were onsite with fixes completed prior to Scarlet’s next voyage later yesterday evening,” the spokesperson said in an emailed statement, noting that all passengers and crew members were safe.

The ship was returning from a round-trip sailing to Key West and the Bahamas that departed on July 12 at the time, according to CruiseMapper. The departure of Scarlet Lady’s next voyage – a five-day round-trip cruise to Mexico and the Bahamas – was delayed several hours, but the itinerary was not impacted, according to the spokesperson.

PortMiami referred USA TODAY’s request for comment to Virgin Voyages.

The incident is not the only one of its kind in recent years. Princess Cruises’ Ruby Princess ship hit a dock in San Francisco earlier this month, and MSC Cruises’ MSC Opera ship hit a dock and tourist river boat in Venice, Italy, in 2019. Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Epic also crashed into a dock in San Juan, Puerto Rico, earlier that year.
