OOSTBURG – Owner Jeri Flipse said opening Margo’s, 110 N. Ninth St. in Oostburg, isn’t her story — it’s God’s story.

With a love of decorating and repurposing goods, Flipse had a dream of opening a store for 10 years. But she said it was never the right time, working full-time and having kids in school and sports.

She said she initially considered opening Margo’s in a smaller building on Center Avenue when it became available but couldn’t make the commitment.

“I just was too chicken, and I didn't know how I was going to do (it) with my job and everything,” she said.

Then, a rental space became available in the strip mall that her father owns. Flipse decided to go for it.

With her children grown, future staff members moving to the area and retiring from previous jobs, everything began to fall into place.

“The next thing I knew, walls were coming down, floors (were) going in,” Flipse said.

The initial iteration of Margo’s was going to be a country store with antiques, but Flipse said she’s not very artsy and her style is more modern.

“This is way better than what I ever envisioned,” Flipse said. “It was like the Lord was saying, ‘Just slow down.’”

Margo’s is a boutique with a little bit of everything, like upcycled furniture, handmade items like aprons and mittens, woodwork, home goods, local authors’ books and Kup’s Coffee.

Flipse hopes Margo’s will be a community store — a place for people to stop and talk.

"My head was saying this little store on Center Avenue. He was saying, 'No, this is the space you're going to use,'" Flipse said. "People are going to be able to come on their way to the Pig (Piggly Wiggly) and to Subway and the store."

"So, I wanted one thing. He (God) had a much better plan for me," she continued.

With the support of family, friends and store partners who helped the store come together, Flipse feels like it’s everyone’s store, not hers.

“I couldn’t do it with(out) the people who dreamed it with me and the people who made it possible, the people who are here every day,” she said.

Margo’s is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays.
