Opa! 45th annual Greek Festival unfolds at St. Demetrios Church in Daytona Beach

Music, dancing, culture and cuisine will be the main attractions at the 45th annual Greek Festival that concludes its three-day weekend run Sunday at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 129 N. Halifax Ave., Daytona Beach.

For many, the heart of the event’s appeal is a tantalizing array of Greek delicacies ranging from the traditional Greek gyro, a blend of lamb and beef wrapped in pita bread and doused with fresh tomatoes, onions and tzatziki sauce. It’s arguably the event’s most popular menu item, although it could face major competition from the Loukoumades dessert of fried cinnamon-flavored dough balls.

In addition to the food, the festival atmosphere is complemented by authentic live music played on instruments that include the Greek bouzouki, an eight-stringed bowl-shaped guitar. There also are daily traditional dance performances, an array of vendors selling themed merchandise and even Greek beer.

Hours are 11 a.m.- 9 p.m. Sunday. Free admission. Visit greekfestivaldaytonabeach.com for details.
