Open casting calls: Enjoying Cape Cod theater from the other side of the stage

The Cape and Islands offer a steady stream of live performances, from shows for children to national premieres on local stages.

With most local shows, Cape Codders can either see them or audition for a chance to be in them. Open auditions for non-union and community theater performers are held nearly every month, generally three to six months before performances are scheduled.

Most community theaters post audition notices on their websites.

For those just waiting for a chance, the Provincetown Theater and Barnstable Comedy Club are holding open auditions at the end of February and beginning of March for a new take on "The Fantasticks," and "Murder on the Rerun," respectively.

East Coast premiere of 'The Fantasticks' in Provincetown stars two men in love

Auditions for non-union actors at the 238 Bradford St. playhouse in Provincetown are being held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25. This will be the East Coast premiere of Tom Jones’ re-imagined adaptation of he and Harvey Schmidt’s musical “The Fantasticks.”

Zoom auditions are available by request. There is a sign-up sheet in the theater lobby and auditions will be on a first-come, first-serve basis.

There will be an accompanist on hand Saturday. Those auditioning should prepare a song from “The Fantasticks” or something in the vocal range of the character for whom they are auditioning.

While the score and story remain the same for “The Fantasticks,” several characters have been rewritten, starting with the show’s young lovers: Matt and Louisa and now Matt and Lewis and are being pushed into each other’s arms not by their gardening fathers but their gardening mothers.

Provincetown Theater officials are especially encouraging auditions by BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and people of color) actors, as well as trans and non-binary performers.

The production will be directed by Provincetown Theater Artistic Director David Drake, with John Thomas serving as musical director. A four-week rehearsal schedule begins June 12 in Provincetown in preparation for a two-month run (four performances a week; Mondays through Thursdays) starting July 10. The pay is $250 per week for non-union actors only.
