What’s Open, Closed On New Year’s Day 2021 In Brookline

BROOKLINE, MA — On New Year’s Day, residents in Brookline will leave behind a year marked by unprecedented challenge. After spending much of the year navigating the coronavirus pandemic, many will no doubt welcome 2021 with open arms.

As we ring in the new year in our town, many local facilities and government offices will take the day off.

Here’s a look at what’s open and closed in Brookline on New Year’s Day:

Town offices will be closed on Jan. 1 for New Year's Day, but they will be open normal hours, Monday, Jan. 4. There will be a one-day delay for trash pickup: Friday on Saturday.

Here's a list of what else is opened and closed on the holiday. This list is ever-expanding so feel free to comment below with more intel.

  • Libraries: Closed

  • Post Office: Closed

  • Restaurants: Open at owner's discretion

    • Cutty's: Open New Years Eve and New Years Day regular hours (10 a.m. to 3 p.m.) Special New Years Day menu.

    • Zaftig's: New Years Eve 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. New Year's Day: 9 a.m. - 7 p.m.

    • Michael's Deli: NYE: Closed. New Year's Day: Open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. ( For the eighth year in a row, only the owner's family will be working)

  • Retail stores: Open at owner's discretion

  • Supermarkets: Open at owner's discretion

  • Liquor stores: Open

  • Banks: Closed

  • Gas stations: Open

  • Coolidge Corner Theatre: Temporarily closed, but offering online events.

  • Parking: Free

However, if you’re hoping to step out for some socially distanced shopping or dining, there are several stores and chain restaurants that will be open on New Year’s Day.

  • TJ Maxx: Open 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

  • Walgreens: Open regular hours.
