What is open and closed on Labor Day around Greater Cincinnati? Here's a look.

Monday, Sept. 5 is Labor Day, the national holiday that honors the American labor movement and modern workers today, celebrated on the first Monday in September.

It's also a signifier of the end of summer, and in Cincinnati, it falls on the weekend of Riverfest and the Western & Southern WEBN fireworks extravaganza that brings hundreds of thousands of people to the banks of the Ohio River to witness the spectacular annual event.

As a result of the holiday, some of the businesses or services you normally use may be closed Monday. Here's a list of what will be open, and what will be closed on Labor Day.

But first, when is Labor Day in 2022?

This year, Labor Day falls on Monday, Sept. 5. It is observed each year on the first Monday in September.

President Grover Cleveland signed a law making it a national holiday (and three-day weekend) in 1894.

What's open and closed for Labor Day on Sept. 5?

Banks: Although many banks observe federal holidays, they are not required to do so. Most banks, including Bank of America, Chase, Fifth Third, U.S. Bank and PNC will be closed. But be sure to check your local bank hours, just in case.

Federal Reserve banks will also be closed on Monday.

Mail service: The United States Postal Service will observe Labor Day and will not deliver regular mail or packages. There will be no UPS pickup or delivery service, and most FedEx services will be closed.

In addition, Amazon will not make any deliveries on Monday.

Trash service: If your regular trash collection day falls on a Monday, the city of Cincinnati will collect trash the following day. Rumpke asks everyone to continue putting their trash on the curb the evening before their scheduled collection day, but residents can see whether the holiday will impact their regular pickup schedule by typing in their zip code on the Rumpke site.

Grocery stores: Most grocery stores, including Kroger, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Target, Walmart, Jungle Jim's, Meijer and Sam's Club will be open. Aldi will operate on limited hours, and Costco will be closed.

Schools: Cincinnati Public Schools will be closed. In Kentucky, Covington Independent Public Schools, Newport Independent Schools, Kenton County Schools, Boone County Schools and Campbell County Schools will be closed.

Local government: In Ohio, City of Cincinnati and Hamilton County offices and nonessential services will be closed, as will those in Butler County, Warren County and Clermont County. In Kentucky, Boone County, Campbell County and Kenton County offices and nonessential services will be also closed.

Federal offices: Labor Day is a federal holiday. All nonessential government employees are off work and most federal government offices are closed.

Stock markets: The New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq Stock Market will be closed.
