Opening date for Sacramento’s newest Costco set. ‘We are so excited,’ councilwoman says
Get ready for long lines and all those bargain deals: The opening for the capital region’s newest Costco in North Natomas has been set.
Sacramento Councilwoman Karina Talamantes, who represents areas of Natomas, Northgate and Gardenland, said the 160,000-square-foot warehouse is expected to open March 14 in the Natomas Crossing neighborhood.
“We are so excited to be welcoming Costco to the Natomas neighborhood!” Talamantes wrote on social media.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony is set for 7:30 a.m. at 3881 E. Commerce Way, near Arena Boulevard, said Kayla Lewandowski, a spokeswoman for Talamantes, who learned the information from a Costco representative.
The opening date is contingent upon the weather, Lewandowski wrote. A request for comment from Costco representatives was not immediately returned.
Costco scheduled an April opening for another capital region location in Loomis, at Sierra College Boulevard and Brace Road.
The locations at both Loomis and Natomas are still hiring for positions such as bakers, cashiers, forklift drivers, meat cutters, pharmacists and senior hearing aid specialists. All open positions, some of which are offering $30 per hour, can be found here.
There are nine other locations for Costco in the capital region. They include Cal Expo, south Sacramento, Citrus Heights, Arden Arcade, Rancho Cordova, Folsom, Roseville, Woodland and Elk Grove.
Why was Natomas chosen?
Talamantes was driving to a news conference honoring life-saving efforts by city workers on Wednesday when she spotted her brother’s car in front her.
She called him to chat, and he said he was going to Costco in Cal Expo — a relatively long journey from Natomas. He couldn’t wait to peruse aisles filled with yummy snacks in a store just down the street from him, she said.
“It’s things like that,” Talamantes said, to explain the buzz of excitement and interest around the imminent opening.
Costco, which isn’t opening a gas station at the North Natomas store, wanted a location along the well-traveled Interstate 5 thoroughfare, Talamantes said. And there’s thousands of people within a few miles of the East Commerce Way location with a membership, she added.
“It’s good for business all around and it’s an exciting thing for Natomas,” she said.
