Opening of Hingham boat ramp delayed a month due to supply chain, environmental issues
HINGHAM – The opening of the newly reconstructed Hingham boat ramp has been pushed back by a month because of supply chain and environmental challenges, officials say.
Originally scheduled to be finished by Memorial Day weekend, the boat ramp, which offers access to Hingham Bay and beyond, is expected to open in late June, town officials said in a news release by John Guilfoil Public Relations.
The new ramp will be about the same width as the previous ramp, but will have a wooden pier and a floating wooden dock to help boaters launch their boats and return them to their trailers.
The Hingham ramp is one of almost 300 boat and canoe access sites, shore fishing areas and sport fishing piers maintained by the state Office of Fishing and Boating Access.
Construction has not been without its challenges. Earlier this year, an excavator got stuck in the mud in Hingham Harbor and had to be pulled out two days later.
Hingham town officials said no one was injured when the excavator fell into the harbor, and emergency crews worked to contain oil and other liquids. Spill containment equipment was set up around the excavator.
