As the month of May reaches the finish line, some businesses around Indianapolis have started their engines while others have hit the brakes.

Here's what came and went this month in the Indianapolis metro area.

Here are openings:

Big Blue Swim School

When: Opened May 1

Where: 13901 Town Center Blvd., Suite 1000, Noblesville

What: A new swim school opened in Hamilton Town Center just in time for summer. It's the 21st location for the swim school and its first in Indiana. Big Blue offers lessons for swimmers from the ages of 3 months to 12 years old.

Vicino

When: Opened May 8

Where: 350 Massachusetts Ave., Suite 150

What: The team behind the popular Oakmont Restaurant debuted a new Italian restaurant downtown this month. Vicino offers pizza, pasta and upscale mains like veal osso bucco, in addition to cocktails, spirits and wine.

Rush Bowls

When: Opened May 12

Where: 11649 Maple St., Fishers

What: One of Fishers' newest additions is perfect for those wanting a nutrient-packed treat. Rush Bowls offers a wide variety of acai bowls and smoothies, and even a pup bowl for your furry friends.

Grounded at the Stutz

When: Opened May 18

Where: 201 N. Capitol Ave.

What: Plant lovers, rejoice: One of the Stutz's new local retailers has everything you need to satisfy your green thumb. Grounded Plant & Floral Co. sells everything from plants and gardening accessories to prints and home décor.

Tinker Coffee

When: Opened May 19

Where: 380 E. Market St.

What: The highly anticipated new location for popular local coffee roasters Tinker Coffee opened this month in the Market Square building downtown. Owners Stephen Hall and Jeff Johnson have three other Tinker locations, two at the airport and one at the AMP.

Dirty Dough

When: Opened May 20

Where: 6159 N. Keystone Ave., Unit 400

What: A new cookie shop is bringing some serious dessert game to Glendale Town Center. Dirty Dough sells stuffed cookies in a variety of flavors, including Reese's, raspberry toaster tart, and cookies and cream. Fishers and Zionsville locations are coming soon, according to the website.

Sierra

When: Opened May 20

Where: 10025 N. Michigan Road, Carmel

What: Part of the T.J. Maxx store brand, Sierra's first Indiana location opened in Carmel this month. The store is located just off of Michigan Road and sells a variety of discounted outdoor gear, activewear and more.

Centerpoint Brewing

When: Opened May 20

Where: 6320 Guilford Ave.

What: Centerpoint's Broad Ripple taproom is the second for the brewery, joining its original location just off the I-65/70 split east of downtown Indianapolis. The taproom is pet friendly, with a variety of beers and the option to order food from the nearby 317 BBQ.

Amelia's at the Stutz

When: Opened May 21

Where: 201 N. Capitol Ave.

What: Amelia's will continue baking up delicious goodness at its third location, joining its Fletcher Place and Windsor Park bakeries. The popular bakery and gourmet grocery is known for its pastries, especially croissants, as well as bread, coffee and gelato. After a soft opening during the Stutz's block party, the bakery will officially be open June 5, according to social media.

Café at the Circle

When: Opened May 22

Where: 49 W. Maryland St., Floor 3

What: Amid all the closings at Circle Centre Mall, there's a new coffee shop opening. The investment in Circle Centre Mall is the second for entrepreneur Kamilah James, who also owns Kemet 360 Jewelry & Accessories. Café at the Circle offers a variety of coffee and tea drinks as well as pastries.

Fresh Market

When: Opened May 24

Where: 1392 S. Range Line Road

What: After over a yearlong wait, Fresh Market finally opened its Carmel location. The Carmel store is the second in Hamilton County, with another store located in Westfield.

Tsaocaa

When: Opened May 26

Where: 530 Massachusetts Ave., Suite 180

What: Just over a month after downtown's LaTea Bubble Tea Lounge closed, a new tea shop is taking over in its stead. Tsaocaa has over 30 locations across the country and specializes in waffles, fried chicken and a variety of fruit tea options.

Here are closings:

Green District

When: Closed May 5

Where: 28 Monument Circle

What: In sweetgreen's successful wake, another downtown salad spot closed this month. Louisville-based Green District has two other Central Indiana locations in Nora and Fishers.

Public House

When: Closed May 9

Where: 4002 N. Boulevard Place

What: The Butler-Tarkington restaurant known for its nachos and creative gourmet corn combos closed mid-May. Owner Sharmaine Cooper said she intends to reopen Public House at another location.
