MONROE COUNTY — Angels are needed for Operation Christmas Drop, an Angels 4 Vets project designed to deliver food and gifts to local disabled and homebound veterans.

The annual event was created by Army veteran William Bruck, owner of Visiting Angels of Monroe, a national provider of in-home care for the elderly.

By selecting a named ornament from one of six Christmas trees set up throughout the county, participants can adopt veterans for the holiday season.

Items such as coffee, food, home cleaning products and soaps, winter clothing like socks, hats, gloves, dinner packages, gift cards and large, sturdy laundry baskets are needed.

All donations will be hand-delivered to disabled and homebound veterans in Monroe County according to Traci Reyes, Visting Angels office manager.

Purchased items can be dropped off by Dec. 15, preferably at Visiting Angels, 15649 S. Telegraph Road or at one of the other drop-off locations.

Tree locations include Bedford Township Veterans Center, 8020 Lewis Ave. (Monday through Thursday); Food Town Fresh Market, 8926 Lewis Ave.; Little Blessings Veteran Outreach, 5776 Sterns Road; Monroe Home Care Shoppe, 345 S. Telegraph Road and The Mall of Monroe, 2121 N. Monroe St.

Donated items will be placed in containers waiting for volunteers, many of them veterans, to arrive to make deliveries from Dec. 20-22. More than 60 veterans were helped last year.

“This project is important because it brings the community together to help people who are less fortunate,” Reyes said. “Our veterans are part of that underserved population.”
