Opinion: Corpus Christi's Prop A is a path to progress with no new taxes
Corpus Christi, with its stunning coastal vistas, an emerging cultural scene, and a growing economy, has always stood as a beacon of potential. To remain competitive with other Texas cities, we must unite in support of Proposition A. This is important because, over the last five years, Corpus Christi has lost an estimated $50 million inconvention business and economic impact. On Nov. 7, Corpus Christi residents will have the opportunity to cast a "YES" vote for Proposition A, a measure that will allow us to protect our seawall, maintain our parks, repair our business streets, boost airport connectivity, make much-needed improvements to the Selena Auditorium, arena, and finally upgrade the convention center.
Prop. A is a well-considered ballot initiative that aims to redirect the existing 1/4 cent sales tax revenue toward the broader development of our city. Currently, these funds are evenly divided between supporting the arena and the seawall, with each receiving 1/8 cent respectively. However, Prop. A expands the allocation of these tax funds to include other municipal assets, all while avoiding any additional tax burden on our citizens.
Our seawall isn't merely a barricade against the elements; it's a symbol of our commitment to preserving our natural beauty. Since 2007, our residents have invested $50 million in seawall improvements, and Prop. A pledges to continue this legacy. With an appropriate annual allocation of funding for routine maintenance and a dedicated$14 million endowment for future emergency repairs, we can ensure the ongoing structural integrity of the seawall and the safety of our community.
Prop. A guarantees consistent investments in our crucial public spaces, keeping our parks secure, enjoyable, and accessible for all residents. We can improve our public pools, splash pads, courts, barbecue pits, tables, and walking trails. Furthermore, through Prop. A, we can fix our commercial and industrial streets, fostering a morevibrant environment for businesses and residents alike. The repair and maintenance of these streets will stimulate economic growth and generate job opportunities, while both projects will ultimately enhance the overall quality of life for our entire community.
Attendance records for the American Bank Center report that 72% of all attendees are from the local community. Prop. A will allow us to repair and renovate the Selena Auditorium, arena, and convention center venues. Prop. A funding will be instrumental in enhancing the overall event experience for residents and visitors alike, spanninggraduations, sporting events, concerts, and cherished local celebrations like Buc Days and the rodeo.In addition, Prop. A also aims to strengthen our partnerships with airlines, paving the way for future expansions that will enhance Corpus Christi's connectivity. This growth can lead to more convenient and cost-effective travel options, benefiting tourism, business travel, and the overall accessibility of our beloved city.
Furthermore, Prop. A presents an exciting opportunity to explore private sector investment in the private sector development, construction, and ownership of a convention center hotel. This venture promises to be a cornerstone of our local tourism economy, transforming Corpus Christi into a premier destination for larger conferences and events, while providing a substantial economic boost. The benefits of a convention center hotel include increased tax revenue, boosted tourism, job creation, and heightened regional recognition.
In conclusion, Prop. A leverages existing tax funds to build our economy and repair our city's critical assets without the burden of additional taxes. A "YES" vote on Prop. A is a clear step forward for Corpus Christi. Proposition A is a resounding commitment to the future economic growth of Corpus Christi. Early voting for this special election will be held Oct. 23 through Nov. 3, with Election Day on Nov. 7. Join us in voting "YES" on Prop. A to keep moving Corpus Christi in the right direction.
