OPINION/LETTER: Doris Duke case shows police are hiding behind the blue wall of silence

The Newport Daily News front page on Nov. 20 read "Case closed (again) on Doris Duke car crash. Detective: No change to previous conclusion."

Surprising? Heck no!

Ridiculous? Heck ya!

The book Peter Lance wrote, "Homicide at Rough Point," uncovers by Sgt. Freddie Newton and Lance's research and investigation done, "that this was no accident, this was murder. And covered up by the Newport chief of police and others."

In my opinion closing this case is yet again a coverup by hiding behind the Blue Wall of Silence.

Doris Duke's account doesn't render itself to common sense with the accumulation of the real evidence and backup testimony.

How is it possible that Detective Wuest who was assigned to review the new evidence, found Mr. Walker's (a man of courage) account of the story to be credible, but states there is no new evidence to change the previous conclusion.

How is it possible for someone like Peter Lance with his undeniable genius reputation and diligent research to be so disregarded?

I grew up in the company of St. Freddie Newton, my dad Buck Whitty's first cousin. An honest and highly respected policeman. I was intrigued by his genius for puzzle solving and meticulous calculations of crimes. He concluded Doris Duke murdered Mr. Tirella.

Why would the chief tell him to back off?

Why are the ones who lie the ones who get rewarded and the ones who tell the truth the ones who are destroyed?

It is easy. It's called the Blue Wall of Silence. A national epidemic in our country that runs deep even within the judicial system. Lying to cover for police who get caught misbehaving. Their loyalty should be for the law, not backing up corrupt police who feel they are above the law.

As assassination on our country by those who took oaths to protect us. Done right under our noses and allowed.

Has anyone in authority considered the ill effects and the tremendous weight fellow police have carrying the lies around for these bad police?

No one should be forced to lie, forced to see their integrity over a corrupt police officer with the threat of retaliation on them if they do.

Has anyone thought what kind of future leaders this Blue Wall of Silence instills in new police officers just wanting to do their job honestly?

Why are we allowing the Blue Wall of Silence to continue when it destroys the very thread of the police officers' oaths?

Hats off to Peter Lance for being honest and doing the right thing. He's one in a million.
