Oppenheimer's Emily Blunt is one of the names almost always thrown into the hat when it comes to superhero casting rumours, but she's really got no desire to put on the spandex.

Appearing on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the actress was asked about past rumours linking her to Captain Marvel, Peggy Carter and Sue Storm, to which she replied they were just "Rumours. Talk. Queries. [Speculation]... that kind of thing".

Host Josh Horowitz then mentioned she was cast as Black Widow until she was forced to do Gulliver's Travels instead, with the role eventually going to Scarlett Johansson.

Blunt responded that by saying "the best girl" ended up playing the MCU super spy, while also sarcastically calling Gulliver's Travels "such a great film".

Speaking about her general distaste for franchise films, the star said: "I don't like to take things on thinking they could be a franchise.

"I love what I love and I hope for the best every time, the leap into the great unknown. I see when I read a script some things are more commercially viable than others, it will not be the reason for me doing it."

Blunt has seen Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, in which her husband John Krasinski makes a brief appearance as Mr Fantastic. Or at least, she's seen the scenes he's in.

"I saw his bit, I was like, 'Oh, there you are,'" she said. "It was kind of fun for him to pop in and do that."

Despite her thoughts about franchises, Blunt admitted that she would love to do a sequel to her science-fiction film Edge of Tomorrow (aka Live Die Repeat).

While she shared that there was a script written and she's seen it, she's not sure the film will happen any time soon.

Oppenheimer is out now in cinemas.
