Oprah Winfrey celebrates her ill father with surprise backyard barbecue

Oprah Winfrey honored her pappy in a special way over the 4th of July holiday weekend.

The media mogul celebrated her father, Vernon Winfrey, with a backyard barbecue on Monday.

“So we’ve been planning a backyard barbecue that’s actually more than a backyard barbecue,” she said in an Instagram video with Earth, Wind & Fire’s “Fantasy” playing in the background. “It’s for Vernon Winfrey Appreciation Day.”

Winfrey, 68, added that she wanted to make sure the longtime barber knew how much his family and friends loved him.

“My father is ill, so we wanted to be able to have all of his friends come and celebrate with him while he’s able to receive the joy,” she said of the 88-year-old Greenville, Miss., native.

The Vernon Winfrey Appreciation Celebration, which took place in Nashville, Tenn., was a surprise for the family patriarch.

Winfrey revealed to her best friend Gayle King that her father “doesn’t even know that this is for him,” adding that he thought it was just a “Fourth of July thing.”

Toward the end of the video — captured by King — Vernon Winfrey is seen sitting in a barber’s chair talking to guests.

The billionaire businesswoman captioned the videoclip with an encouraging message to her 21.3 million followers: “Giving my father his “flowers” while he’s still well enough to smell them. Happy 4th of July as you gather with your family and friends. Remember to celebrate each other.”
