The company will honor the enduring legacy of the late congressman and civil rights icon, who died July 17 at age 80, with the primetime special, “John Lewis: Celebrating a Hero” premiering Aug. 4 at 10 p.m. EDT on CBS.

Hosted by Oprah Winfrey, Tyler Perry, Gayle King and Brad Pitt, the special will take viewers on a journey into Lewis’ remarkable life, his work, and the principles that guided him: wisdom, courage, power, faith, and inspiration.

Featuring unique musical performances, newsmaker interviews and inspirational conversations that celebrate and honor Lewis’ contributions to the country, artists taking part include John Legend, Common, Jennifer Hudson, Billy Porter, Yolanda Adams, Jon Batiste, Trevor Noah and Wynonna.

“John Lewis was an extraordinary man,” Winfrey said with the announcement of the show. “A man of great vision who lived a life with the purpose of making sure America lived out its ideals.”

“His commitment to the cause was unwavering, his sacrifices immeasurable,” King added. “And he should forever be remembered in the ‘pantheon of patriots.’”

Produced by Jesse Collins Entertainment, the one-hour special will be presented by the Procter & Gamble Company, which will use the breaks to shine a light on bias, inequality and racism through its series of thought-provoking short films, like “The Talk,” “The Look” and “The Choice,” with the intention to inspire important conversations that drive understanding, empathy and change.

“Congressman Lewis was one of the most prominent and forceful voices for change in this country. Losing that voice now is so difficult as the country confronts structural racism. But John Lewis gave us the will and the way to continue his work,” said Susan Zirinsky, president and senior executive producer of CBS News. “This special reminds us the journey will not be easy, and there’s no turning back.”

“John Lewis: Celebrating a Hero” will also be telecast at a later date on ViacomCBS brands BET, MTV and Smithsonian, as well as OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network.
