OPSWA High School Football Notebook Week 3: Robison's big day among top state highlights

COLUMBUS — High school football players from all around the state did their best to put on a show in Week 3.

And, boy, did they.

In a combined effort, the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association would like to highlight athletes and teams who had standout performances with the OPSWA High School Football Notebook. Each week, the OPSWA will release its top performers from all around the state.

Here are Week 3’s standouts:

∙ Clear Fork senior running back Trystyn Robison had just two carries but both went for touchdowns — of 48 and 23 yards — and he also added a 25-yard touchdown catch to his busy offensive night as the Colts beat the Lexington 38-7.

∙ Ashland Crestview’s Owen Barker had four tackles for loss and a sack to go with a 9-yard touchdown catch during the Cougars’ 37-17 win over Sparta Highland. The Cougars are 3-0 and riding a 13-game regular-season winning streak.

∙ Ontario improved to 3-0 for the first time since 2011 by beating Mansfield Madison 28-14 behind a second-half shutout performance from the defense. The Warriors scored on defense when Quinten Frankhouse returned an interception 44 yards for a score and also added a double-pass touchdown on offense when Peyton Dzugan hit Braxton Hall for a 52-yard strike.

∙ Lucas improved to 2-1 with a 42-14 victory over Wynford. The Cubs racked up 343 total yards of offense, with 210 on the ground behind Andrew Fanello’s big night of 133 yards and two touchdowns. He also added a touchdown catch in the blowout victory.

∙ Plymouth continues to get offensive explosions all over the field. The Big Red won 50-42 in overtime over Wellington after the Dukes scored 20 points in the fourth quarter, forcing the Big Red to score and go for two to tie the score and send it to overtime. Plymouth did, and then ended up scoring on the first possession of OT to pull off the win. Plymouth is allowing 44.3 points a game and scoring 42.3.

∙ Elder senior Luke Flowers had 114 yards rushing and two touchdowns in a 21-20 win over Springboro.

∙ RJ West of Princeton was 8-for-11 passing for 168 yards and three touchdowns, and added 42 yards and a score rushing in a 71-0 walloping of Lakota East.

∙ Riley Woods of Princeton had 129 yards rushing and two touchdown receptions for 72 yards in its 71-0 win over Lakota East.

∙ West Virginia commit Jordan Jackson of Fairfield ran for 237 yards and a score in a 34-7 win over Colerain.

∙ Fairfield junior quarterback Talon Fisher ran for 154 yards and three touchdowns in a 34-7 win over Colerain.

∙ Milford quarterback Austin Harden threw for 290 yards and four touchdowns in a 47-21 win over Loveland.

∙ Georgia Tech commit Trey Cornist ran for 127 yards and two scores in a 54-14 Winton Woods win over West Clermont.

∙ Anderson running back Brodey Berg had 117 yards and four touchdowns in a 44-41 win vs Lebanon.

∙ Santos Alvarez had 13 catches for 107 yards in Anderson’s 44-41 win vs Lebanon.

∙ CJ Hester ran for 163 yards and two scores in Wyoming’s 41-0 win over Aiken.

∙ McNicholas quarterback Braden Bobo was 15-for-18 passing for 254 yards and five touchdowns as the Rockets beat Goshen 49-13.

∙ AJ Metzger of New Richmond was 24-for-30 passing for 290 yards and four touchdowns in a 40-33 win over Western Hills.

∙ Laurence Smith of New Richmond had 117 yards rushing and a touchdown plus eight catches for 85 yards and another score in its 40-33 win over Western Hills.

∙ Zachary Chisman ran for 140 yards and five touchdowns and added four catches for 77 yards as Western Brown beat Monroe 65-51.

∙ Senior quarterback Drew Novak threw for 310 yards and a score and ran for 111 yards and three touchdowns as Western Brown beat Monroe 65-51.

∙ Woodward quarterback Armoud Seals threw for 419 yards and six touchdowns in a 42-28 win over Bethel-Tate.

∙ Woodward’s Donte Ferrell had eight catches for 270 yards and two touchdowns, an 89-yard kickoff return for a score and an interception as the Bulldogs beat Bethel-Tate 42-28.

∙ Moeller junior running back Jordan Marshall ran for 129 yards and two scores in a 43-14 win over East Central (Indiana).

∙ St. Xavier senior quarterback Jack O'Malley passed for 329 yards and four touchdowns and added a rushing touchdown as the Bombers beat Olentangy Liberty 45-21.

∙ McComb’s Brandon Althauser ran 47 yards for one touchdown, caught two TD passes covering 47 and 34 yards, and returned a punt 45 yards for a fourth score in the Panthers' 55-0 win over Vanlue. McComb scored six touchdowns in the first quarter against Vanlue, which started the season with 13 players on the roster and, at one point in a 38-36 loss to Ridgedale a week earlier, had to play 10 against 11 due to injuries.

∙ Arlington is one of the winningest programs in the Blanchard Valley Conference, but for years the Red Devils had a nemesis named Liberty-Benton around its neck. That changed Friday when senior running back Lucas Fenstermaker rushed for 132 yards and two TDs and Arlington came away with a 16-13 win to end a 20-game losing streak to the Eagles. Liberty-Benton came up inches short on a fourth-and-27 play with 1:15 left, got the ball back in the final seconds after a botched punt, but could not connect on a game-tying 42-yard field goal attempt on the last play of the game.

∙ Pandora-Gilboa senior running back Ethan Luginbill rushed for 161 yards and scored his ninth, 10th and 11th touchdowns of the season in leading the Rockets to a 33-21 win over Leipsic in a nonleague battle between the Putnam County rivals.

∙ Carson Copeland scored Morgan’s only touchdown and made the game-sealing tackle in a 7-6 win at Philo. He also had 72 yards on 18 carries and caught three passes for 47 yards.

∙ Max Lyall completed 20 of 31 passes for 279 yards and two TDs in Tri-Valley’s 14-13 win over Jackson.

∙ Hunter Rose ran for 108 yards and three scores on 22 carries, Lukas Ratliff went 18-of-24 passing for 291 yards with a TD and Ryan Hobbs caught eight passes for 112 yards with a 22-yard score as New Lexington dropped John Glenn 26-14.

∙ Reid Packer had 244 total yards, including 128 rushing, and accounted for two scores and Alex Poirer added 81 yards and two scores on eight totes in Sheridan’s 28-7 loss to Logan.

∙ After his team was pinned at its own 1-yard line by a Lucasville Valley punt, Piketon sophomore running back Buddy Wilson responded by breaking a 99-yard touchdown run. That scamper will put Wilson in the OHSAA record book for longest touchdown run, tying 54 others. Wilson finished the game with 20 carries for 198 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Piketon ultimately lost 21-14 to Lucasville Valley.

∙ Although Waverly junior running back Jase Hurd didn't go over the 200-yard rushing mark for the third straight week, he still managed to carry the ball 33 times for a 148 yards and a pair of touchdowns in Waverly's 48-27 loss to the Unioto Shermans. After three weeks, Hurd has 96 rushes for 644 yards and nine touchdowns.

∙ After falling being 16-0 to the Southeastern Panthers in the second quarter, the Eastern Eagles (Pike County) found some momentum with a big play on special teams. After a touchdown, Southeastern fumbled the two-point conversion attempt and Eastern junior Teagan Werner scooped the ball up and took it 94 yards for two points. Southeastern won the game 40-22.

∙ Dawaun Green gained 76 of his 228 yards during a 14-play, 97-yard game-winning drive as Pickerington North beat Upper Arlington 18-13 in a battle of unbeaten projected central Ohio powers. Green scored from six yards out with 1:15 remaining to cap the drive.

∙ Quarterback Nate Nemeth rushed for 230 yards and three touchdowns, returned a kickoff 95 yards for a score, returned a punt 54 yards and had an interception in Berne Union's 40-15 win over Zanesville Rosecrans.

∙ Will Cooper of Thomas Worthington completed 21 of 41 passes for 390 yards — his third straight 300-yard performance — with four touchdowns and two interceptions but was sacked 10 times as Grove City knocked off the unbeaten Cardinals 42-26. Trevor Mills recorded four of the sacks and Christian Isaacs three for the Greyhounds.

∙ Miamisburg quarterback Brock Vaughn was a perfect 7-for-7 passing for 238 yards and two scores, receiver Jackson McGohan had seven catches for 171 yards and Christian Davis two catches for 137 yards in Miamisburg’s 43-14 win over Harrison.

∙ Defending Division IV state champion Clinton-Massie is off to a rough start. While playing three good teams — Waynesville, Bishop Fenwick and Trenton Edgewood — the Falcons are off to their first 0-3 start since 2001, which also was the last time head coach Dan McSurley and his squad failed to make the postseason.

∙ Centerville’s Nic Bruder recorded his second touchdown on defense with a 22-yard interception return for the only touchdown in the Elks’ 10-0 win over Gahanna Lincoln.

∙ Valley View quarterback Caden Henson threw for 204 yards and Jake Clark ran for 133 as the Spartans out-gained Ross 417-113 in a 33-0 win.

∙ Perkins sophomore receiver Braylon Collier caught seven passes for 210 yards and four touchdowns in the Pirates' 49-0 win at Port Clinton. All of Collier's receptions came in the first half, highlighted by an 80-yard score on a slant. His quarterback, Logan Lesch, threw for 310 yards and six touchdowns in the first half.

∙ Pirates senior Jayden Rowe became Perkins' all-time receiving yards leader (1,326) on a 38-yard touchdown catch in the first half. He already holds the school's receptions record at 81 and counting.

∙ Oak Harbor's Jaqui Hayward ran nine times for 156 yards and three TDs in the Rockets' 55-34 win over Rossford. Hayden Buhro also had three total touchdowns, two on the ground and one receiving.

∙ Bellevue junior quarterback Jax LaPata ran 39 times for 236 yards in the Redmen's 24-9 win at Shelby's new Whippet Athletic Complex. He scored twice on the ground, threw a touchdown pass and caught another from Tyler Ray. LaPata also tallied eight tackles and an interception on defense.

∙ Huron senior quarterback Dylan Hohler sealed the Tigers' 55-49 win at Genoa with an interception with less than a minute remaining. He had already done tons of damage with 374 passing yards and three passing TDs to go with 117 yards on the ground and two more scores.

∙ After turning the ball over four times, including three interceptions, in a Week 2 loss to Tinora, Wauseon forced five turnovers, including four interceptions, in a 28-12 win over rival Napoleon Friday night. Jude Armstrong and Tyson Rodriguez each had two interceptions for the Indians, with Armstrong returning a pick 13 yards for a touchdown to ice the game in the fourth quarter.

∙ After playing only one game last season due to low numbers, Holgate returned to action Saturday at Sandusky Central Catholic in eight-man football. The Tigers defeated Sandusky CC 32-24 for their first win since defeating Tri-State 34-6 on Oct. 23, 2020. Xavier McCord was 13-of-17 passing for 258 yards and two touchdowns and also rushed for 35 yards and two more TDs on 10 carries to pace Holgate.

∙ Chardon knocked off Naples First Baptist Academy (Fla.) 31-24 in overtime behind a big game from returning All-Ohio defensive end Alex Kisley, who had eight tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks. Trey Liebhardt, another returning All-Ohioan, intercepted a pass in overtime to seal the win.

∙ There were some crazy offensive numbers put up in Gates Mills Gilmour Academy's 41-35 win over Hawken. For Gilmour, quarterback Jake Kavcdic completed 11 of 20 passes for 226 yards and three touchdowns. His twin, Andy, carried 24 times for 204 yards and three scores. For Hawken, Dominic Johnson carried 33 times for 221 yards and three touchdowns.

∙ Chagrin Falls Kenston quarterback Nikko Georgiou completed 21 of 31 passes for 326 yards and four touchdowns in the Bombers' 31-17 win over Chardon Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin.

∙ After rushing for 377 yards and five TDs in its first win of the season in the eight-man game, Stryker turned to the pass game in week two against Morenci (Mich.) with 310 pass yards and five TDs in a 44-38 victory. Stryker quarterback Jacob Cadwell was 18-of-26 passing for 310 yards and five TDs while rushing for 89 yards and another score. Levi Barnum, who rushed for 320 yards and three TDs in the opener, caught seven passes for 170 yards and four touchdowns against Morenci.

∙ Antwerp quarterback Carson Altimus had 267 yards passing and five touchdowns and needed just eight completions and nine attempts to do it as the Archers bowled over West Unity Hilltop 65-8.

∙ Ottawa-Glandorf fell 21-12 to Western Buckeye League foe Elida for the first 0-3 start for the program since a winless season in 1995. However, the Titans’ three losses have come against 3-0 Eastwood, 2-1 Wapakoneta and 3-0 Elida.

∙ After surrendering 291 rushing yards on 44 attempts in a 40-21 loss to Otsego last season, Liberty Center shut down the Knights on the ground with 23 yards on 20 attempts on Friday in a 9-0 victory, the Tigers’ second shutout in three games.

∙ Westerville North (2-1) running back Stanley Jackson, Jr. — son of former Ohio State quarterback Stanley Jackson —ran for 175 yards on 23 totes and a touchdown in the Warriors' 17-14 win at Chillicothe (2-1). As a team, Westerville North compiled 231 of its 347 yards of total offense on the ground.

∙ Mount Gilead’s Garrett George ran for 210 yards on 25 carries and scored two touchdowns in a win over Elgin.

∙ Hillsboro running back Dom Smart finished with 175 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 15 carries in Hillsboro’s 44-27 win over the East Clinton Astros. The win was also the first career win for Hillsboro coach Nathan Horne.

∙ Washington quarterback Troy Thompson was 13-of-15 passing for 306 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions as the Blue Lions defeated Paint Valley 48-0. Washington wide receiver Calum Brown totaled three receptions for 162 yards and two touchdowns.

∙ Franklin Furnace Green senior Landan Lodwick rushed for 171 yards and four touchdowns on 11 carries, caught the Bobcats' only pass completion for 4 yards, and returned one kickoff for 30 yards in the Bobcats' 41-14 win at Morral Ridgedale.

∙ Wheelersburg senior Ethan Glover gained 166 yards and scored three touchdowns on 13 carries in the Pirates' 28-21 win at Russell (Ky.)

∙ Xenia's Trei'Shaun Sanders and Tremell Wright combined for five touches and five touchdowns during the first half of a 47-0 win over Fairborn. Wright caught TD passes of 80 and 72 yards, while Sanders ran for scores of 40, 63 and 6 yards. Sanders had 185 yards on six carries and four TDs. Wright's two TDs were his only receptions of the game.

∙ Northeastern's Cade Houseman was a one-player wrecking crew at Greeneview. He completed 38 of 48 passes for 385 yards, one touchdown with four interceptions, but also ran 15 times for 84 yards and two touchdowns, while compiling 18 total tackles and 2.5 for loss in a 21-20 OT win.

∙ Beavercreek's Quentin Youngblood ran for a career-high 138 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries in a 56-23 win over Ponitz CTC.

∙ Granville junior Dante Varrasso caught eight passes for 171 yards, including touchdowns of 29, 40 and 53 yards, in a 38-16 win over Johnstown. In a rare occurrence during the game, sophomore Beckett Long ran for three 2-point conversions for the Blue Aces (3-0).

∙ Senior Trey Robinson caught a 62-yard TD pass from junior Steele Meister with 13 seconds left, giving Newark a 28-21 win over Marion Harding. It was the first two-game winning streak for the Wildcats since 2016.

∙ For the second time in three weeks, Newark Catholic had its game canceled, this time due to death of a student at Columbus Academy. Week 1's game against Bishop Ready was canceled due to weather. This means the Green Wave (1-0), the defending Division VII state runner-up, must play the remainder of its games to be eligible for the playoffs. At least eight games are required.

∙ Mason Oliver of Bloomdale Elmwood ran 19 times for 280 yards and five touchdowns in a 53-21 win over Harrod Allen East. Oliver, a first team All-Ohioan in Division V last year, has 679 yards and eight touchdowns on just 49 carries (13.9-yard average) for the 3-0 Royals.

∙ Sam McCaffery of Toledo Ottawa Hills intercepted two passes, including one he returned for a 32-yard touchdown, and recovered a fumble in a 35-21 win Thursday over Metamora Evergreen. McCaffery also had TD catches of 26 and 68 yards. Riley Dunbar of Evergreen hauled in seven catches for 118 yards and a TD.

∙ Carson Dominique of Archbold rushed for 212 yards and four touchdowns on 21 carries in a 52-28 victory over Millbury Lake. Dominique's teammate, QB Cade Brenner, was 19-of-26 passing for 310 yards and a touchdown.

∙ Joe Caswell of Whitehouse Anthony Wayne rushed for 205 yards on 33 attempts, including touchdown runs of 9, 6, and 4 yards in a 28-10 win over Toledo Whitmer.

∙ Taylen Miller of Holland Springfield carried 18 times for 202 yards and two touchdowns in a 50-37 loss to Oregon Clay. Blue Devils quarterback Will Scott completed 19 of 29 passes for 317 yards and three touchdowns. Clay sophomore QB Mason Heintschel completed 22 of 27 passes for 341 yards and four touchdowns.

∙ Connor Walendzak of Perrysburg ran 24 times for 145 yards and scored three touchdowns in a 48-41 overtime win over Toledo St. John’s Jesuit. In the process, Walendzak became the Yellow Jackets' career rushing leader. He was named first team Division I All-Ohio in 2020, and was selected to the D-I second team last year. Perrysburg quarterback T.J. Takats completed 12 of 25 passes for 207 yards and four touchdowns in the win.

∙ Aiden Brunkhorst of Genoa was 30-of-40 passing for 326 yards and three touchdowns in a 55-49 loss to Huron. Genoa receiver Austin Teet caught nine passes for 129 yards and a TD.

∙ Alex Williams of Rossford was 27-of-48 passing for 296 yards and two touchdowns in a 55-34 loss at Oak Harbor. Teammate Brenden Revels caught nine of those passes for 131 yards and a TD.
