Lucas' Logan Toms helped the Cubs knock off Linden McKinley last week by not running a single pass play.

With the conclusion of Week 8, the 2022 high school football playoff picture is starting to take shape.

Many teams clinched playoff spots and it is because of many of these individual performances.

Here is this week's Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association High School Football Notebook.

∙ Lucas ran zero pass plays in a 49-14 win over Linden McKinley, but the Cubs piled up 416 rushing yards on 41 carries, headlined by Logan Toms, who had 183 yards and four touchdowns on nine carries to help the Cubs end a three-game losing streak.

∙ Mansfield Senior forced four turnovers on four consecutive Wooster possessions and ran for more than 200 yards in the first half in back-to-back games to improve to 6-2. Amarr Davis had two interceptions, including a pick-six as the defense continues to set the tone for the Tygers in 2022.

∙ Crestview improved their regular-season winning streak to 19 games with a 39-13 win over Plymouth in which the Cougars scored six rushing touchdowns — three by Owen Barker, two by Adison Reymer and one by Michael Mays. The Cougars can clinch at least a share of their fourth consecutive Firelands Conference championship at St. Paul this week.

∙ Clear Fork’s Pawie Ault returned the second-half kickoff 90 yards for the score in a 35-0 win over Marion Harding. The Colts clinched a playoff berth and remained atop the standings in the MOAC with the business-like victory.

∙ In a 37-20 victory over River Valley, Shelby ran for 300 yards and piled up 536 yards of total offense, headlined by freshman quarterback Bryden DeVito, who went 16-for-27 passing for 236 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 125 yards and a score on 12 carries to account for 361 yards of total offense.

∙ Madison ended a 15-game losing streak by knocking off Ohio Cardinal Conference rival Mount Vernon 35-0 in Week 8. It was Scott Valentine's first win as Rams coach. Hunter Hutcheson led the way with two rushing touchdowns and Zach Glasgo has a 30-yard pick-six.

∙ On a night a significant milestone was reached, it took a record performance at Norwalk St. Paul.

With a 60-52 shootout win at Edon on Oct. 7, St. Paul head coach John Livengood unofficially became the 17th coach in Ohio high school football history to reach the 300-win milestone.

Of the 17 coaches, Livengood has the third-best winning percentage (.789), and is only the sixth among that list to win 300 games at the same school.

Now in his 32nd season, through 31 years, Livengood’s St. Paul teams have won 21 Firelands Conference championships, eight regional championships, been to five state championship games and won the 2009 state title (Division VI).

However, the victory took an incredible offensive night by the Flyers to outlast the Bombers.

Senior running back Quincey Crabbs — an honorable mention All-Ohioan in 2021 — ran for a St. Paul single-game record of 408 yards and five touchdowns on 38 attempts. That broke the old program mark that had stood for a decade (Michael Griffin, 335 yards) by 73 yards.

Crabbs also became unofficially the 60th reported instance of a 400-yard game according to the OHSAA football record book. It is also the 36th-highest total in state history for a single game.

All told, the Flyers (6-2) totaled 698 yards of total offense, including 635 with all eight TDs on the ground.

Not to be outdone, the Bombers (4-4) netted 642 yards of offense, as quarterback Kyler Sapp was 38-of-53 passing for 556 yards and 5 TDs.

Receiver Caden Nester caught 11 passes for 157 yards and 2 TDs, while Max Radabaugh had 10 catches for 234 yards and a score — and Carter Kiess had nine catches for 110 yards and 2 TDs.

∙ Cleveland Glenville beat Cleveland East Tech 39-0 Friday for its fifth straight shutout. The Tarblooders have six shutouts and have allowed 35 points all season.

∙ Mitch Bolden completed 17-of-25 passes for 246 yards and a touchdown and also ran for 91 yards and four touchdowns in leading Lakota West, the state’s second-ranked team in Division I, to a 38-31 double-overtime win over Fairfield on Friday. The win also kept the Firebirds undefeated at 8-0 (7-0 Greater Miami Conference) and put them in position to win their third straight league title with two weeks to go in the season. They play Middletown and Colerain to close out regular season action.

∙ Fairfield quarterback Talon Fisher threw for 139 yards and a touchdown and ran for 137 yards and two scores in a 38-31 double-overtime loss to Lakota West on Friday.
