What are your options during a mobile outage?

JOPLIN, Mo. — Following Thursday’s AT&T mobile outage (2/22), many people may be wondering what to do in the case of an emergency.

“Stronghold Data” Chief Operating Officer (COO), Joe Thomas says during the outage, he found that many people were unable to use their phones unless they were connected to Wi-Fi.

He says once you connect to your home’s Wi-Fi, you should be able to use calling and texting services.

He recommends if you’re unable to connect to the internet, you’ll need to find a friend with a working phone.

“It really highlights the need for multiple methods of communication. I mean, depending on the severity of when you need to communicate something. Obviously, timing. If you had an emergency, it would be very bad timing. I’m sure there were some cases of calls that needed to be made that couldn’t be made this morning, and that’s obviously very important,” said Stronghold Data Chief Operating Officer, Joel Thomas.

Experts say it’s rare to have an outage this widespread. AT&T listed the cause of Thursday’s outage as “maintenance activity.”
