Oradell Avenue to reopen fully on Friday night after sinkhole repairs completed

ORADELL — Oradell Avenue will open fully in both directions tonight, after a sinkhole had kept the eastbound side of the thoroughfare closed since the end of May.

A sinkhole caused by a ruptured sewer line was first spotted on May 23 near the Oradell Street train station. A passerby had originally reported it to the police believing it was a pothole, police Sgt. Kyle Costa said at the time.

Acquiring a replacement 42-inch pipe wasn't easy, said Mayor Dianne Didio. However, the borough was finally able to purchase one from Texas, which arrived on June 3.

Both sides of Oradell Avenue had been closed since Thursday morning to do installation work and the road is anticipated to open on both sides by 9 to 10 p.m. in both directions, Didio said on Friday.

Oradell Avenue is one of the main entranceways into the borough. The Oradell Avenue Bridge, which is several feet away from the train station and connects residential neighborhoods east of the Hackensack River and downtown Oradell, will undergo renovations in the near future, borough officials have said.

The county plans on releasing its final concept development report for the replacement bridge, which is considered "functionally obsolete," this summer.
