Orange County mayor joins volunteers for deliveries with Meals on Wheels anniversary

Seniors First in West Orange County received a special delivery on Wednesday.

Mayor Jerry Demings worked with volunteers and spoke with seniors as part of the 21st celebration of the county’s Meals on Wheels program.

Seniors First said that amid a lingering COVID-19 pandemic and high inflation, providing meals for seniors is an essential service to keep them healthy.

Demings said the volunteers were extraordinary, and he knew what it was like, as he delivered meals to his parents before they passed away.

The celebration also commemorated a milestone.

It has been over 50 years since former President Nixon established a national nutrition program for seniors.

Nationwide Meals on Wheels programs will join forces throughout March to address food insecurity.
