Orange County's Use Of Moderna Vaccine Paused Due To Reactions

ORANGE COUNTY, CA — Orange County Health Care Agency has paused using the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine from a specific lot due to possible allergic reactions in Southern California. It was reported late Monday.

According to Moderna, the lot, known as 041L20A, has caused possible allergic reactions in multiple patients in San Diego. State Epidemiologist Dr. Erica Pan recommended Sunday that providers stop administering doses from the batch of vaccine following "a higher-than-usual number" of possibly severe allergic reactions at a mass vaccination site in San Diego. Fewer than 10 people experienced the anaphylaxic allergic reaction, and the recommendation was issued "out of an extreme abundance of caution."

That incident is under investigation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S Food and Drug Administration, and the manufacturer, it was reported late Monday.

"To date, the HCA has received zero notifications of allergic reactions requiring medical attention due to any Moderna vaccines," an OC Health Care Agency spokesperson reported.

According to the State vaccine registry, 5,217 individuals in Orange County received the Moderna vaccine lot 041L20A. It is not known how many Orange County doses are on hold as of this report. Nearly a million doses from the lot have already been distributed to about 1,700 vaccination sites in 37 states, Moderna said. It is not yet known if allergic reactions were reported from this batch in other states.

Throughout the county, the HCA and healthcare providers continue to schedule appointments and distribute vaccines to those who qualify in Phase 1A, all tiers, and those over 65 years old.

There are currently more than 250,000 individuals registered in Othena, according to OC Health Care.
