Orange deputies investigating sexual assaults at bus stops on Hiawassee Road
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office is stepping up patrols after three women were sexually assaulted at bus stops along Hiawassee Road in recent weeks.
The most recent happened around 6:18 a.m. Saturday at the bus stop on Hiawassee at Hennepin Boulevard. Deputies say a masked suspect walked up to a woman and sexually assaulted her at gun point.
Two similar attacks happened Feb. 2 at the bus stop at Hiawassee and River Oaks Drive. The incidents began as armed robberies and turned into sexual assaults, deputies said.
“We want to make sure that residents in the area will be vigilant about their personal safety,” OCSO said in an unsigned statement. “... We would urge women in the area to avoid walking or standing outside alone, particularly when it’s dark.”
