Orcas Chew off Yacht Rudder in Strait of Gibraltar, Boater Says

A pod of orcas swam around and under a yacht sailing in the Strait of Gibraltar on April 25, unnerving those on board for three hours and chewing off the vessel’s rudder, according to one of the boat’s owners.

Video recorded by Zoe Barlow shows orcas swimming near the boat as it rocks back and forth in calm waters.

Barlow told Storyful the pod of orcas followed her and her husband’s yacht for “three hours and chewed off our rudder.”

She added, “It was a ferocious and sustained attack.” Their yacht was eventually towed in to Tangier for repair. Credit: Zoe Barlow via Storyful
