Oregon 3-year-old dies after shooting himself in the head by accident

A 3-year-old Oregon boy died after he accidentally shot himself in the head with a handgun Friday night.

According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, 3-year-old James Kenneth Lindquester got a gun out of a drawer at a home in Aloha, about 10 miles west of Portland, and shot himself around 9:50 p.m. Family members called 911 and he was rushed to a nearby hospital after attempts to revive him were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead around midnight.

“I think if you ask any first responder, the death of a child is the absolute worst call that we go to,” Washington County Deputy Shannon Wilde told KOMO News. “It’s tough, a lot of us are parents ourselves. I know some of the responders on scene last night have children, some have children the same age as this little boy and it’s tough. We see a lot of horrible things but seeing a child in that situation is the worst.”

Investigators said so far no charges had been filed in related to the shooting. The Washington County Sheriff’s Violent Crimes Unit and the Special Investigations Unit as well as the Oregon Department of Human Services are leading the investigation.
