Oregon-made romance movies to stream this Valentine’s Day

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — With Valentine’s Day approaching, romance movie enthusiasts could be looking beyond classics like “The Notebook” and “Notting Hill” to add to their watchlist.

Oregon may be a more popular location for horror and thriller movies, but plenty of filmmakers have used the state as the backdrop for their love stories — although some are more conventional than others.

“Overboard” (1987)

Goldie Hawn portrays a wealthy, mean-spirited heiress who is diagnosed with amnesia after falling off a boat. Although she is married to another man, her hired carpenter — played by Kurt Russell — convinces her that she is his wife and the mother of four boys. While acting as a family, the two somehow fall in love. The movie features scenes in the beach town of Newport.

“Feast of Love” (2007)

In this film inspired by Charles Baxter’s 2000 novel “The Feast of Love,” Morgan Freeman stars as a college professor who narrates the complicated relationships of customers who frequent a coffee shop in Portland. Residents may recognize some of the scenes set at Reed College or the Lucky Labrador Brew Pub.

“Bongwater” (1998)

Luke Wilson is the main character in this story about a Portlander whose love of marijuana causes his love interest to move to New York City. Before he travels to NYC in hopes of rekindling the relationship, the film includes many scenes in Portland, Sauvie Island and Vancouver, Wash.

“Twilight” (2008)

The jury may still be out on whether “Twilight” is a true love story, but the movie based on Stephenie Meyer’s fantasy book was considered swoon-worthy by many. Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson act as love interests who live in Forks, Wash. — but many scenes were filmed in Portland, St. Helens and Oregon beaches and parks.
