This story will continue to be updated as more results come in. Because ballots could be mailed on Election Day starting this year, elections officials caution the winners may not be known for several days. Election offices expect vote counts after Tuesday to rise more than in past years due to valid ballots arriving at counting locations up to seven days after the election.

Val Hoyle, the state's acting labor commissioner and a former representative of west Eugene and Junction City, won Tuesday's Democratic primary for Oregon's 4th Congressional District, taking nearly 65% of the votes reported by noon Wednesday.

Eight Democrats were seeking to replace retiring U.S. Rep. Peter DeFazio, who has held the seat since 1987. Hoyle got 49,078 of the 75,945 total votes reported by noon Thursday.

Because ballots can be mailed on Election Day this year, election officials do not expect final results for several days.

But the Associated Press called the race for Hoyle on Tuesday night — and Hoyle, herself, claimed victory.

"I want to thank all my supporters, all of the voters who cast a ballot in this race, and all of the other candidates who stepped up to run in this primary. I'm honored to be the Democratic nominee in #OR04, and we've got a lot of work ahead of us. I'm ready for this fight," Hoyle said on Twitter after the results were posted Tuesday.

Republican Alek Skarlatos did not face a primary challenger and will move on to the general election in November.

The candidate who got the next highest number of the votes reported by Thursday was Doyle Canning, who challenged DeFazio unsuccessfully in 2020. Canning got 11,700 votes reported by noon Thursday, just over 15% of the total.
