Oregon Senate honors two longtime leaders who passed away

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The Oregon Senate paid tribute Monday, Feb. 26, to two of its longtime leaders who have died in the past year.

Democrat Bill Bradbury of Bandon was Senate president in 1993 and 1994. He came to the Senate in 1985 after two terms in the House, and was Senate majority leader from 1987 to 1993. After Republicans gained a majority in 1994, Bradbury resigned from the Senate in spring 1995, but then was appointed Oregon secretary of state in 1999. He served nine years, winning two full terms. He lost a primary bid for governor in 2010, but was appointed to the Northwest Power and Conservation Council in 2010 and served until 2017.

Bradbury died on April 14, 2023, while he and his wife were on a world cruise. He was 73.

He disclosed in 1981 that he had multiple sclerosis.

“What he communicated every day was his gratitude for life,” said Sen. Jeff Golden, a Democrat from Ashland who was Bradbury’s chief of staff in the 1993 session — the longest session up to then. “He was Oregon’s guru of gratitude.”
