Organ Mountain High's baseball team's season came to an end Thursday in the quarterfinal round of the New Mexico Activties Association Class 5A playoffs against Hobbs. Centennial softball also fell to Hobbs, but the Hawks' championship hopes remain alive in the consolation bracket after a 2-1 win over Cleveland.

Additionally, Mesilla Valley Christian's softball season ended with a 12-0 loss to Tularosa in round four of the consolation bracket. Mesilla Valley defeated Jal 19-13 and Santa Rosa Thursday to advance to the fourth round.

No. 4 seed Organ Mountain took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning before No. 5 seed Hobbs struck back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. Organ Mountain never recaptured the lead, and Hobbs rode its lead the rest of the way to a 5-1 victory.

No. 2 seed Centennial softball fell behind 1-0 in the first inning before eventually rallying to tie the game at 4-4 in the fifth inning. No. 7 seed Hobbs scored the winning run in the seventh and final inning, sending the Hawks to the consolation bracket. Centennial will play La Cueva Friday at 11 a.m. at Cleveland High School.

Because the state softball tournament is double-elimination, Centennial's championship hopes remain alive, although the Hawks will be eliminated with another loss.

Hobbs advanced to play Alamogordo.

"We didn't play bad. In the first inning, we had runners on first and third with one out, and Ivan Cogles hit a ball as hard as you can hit it right at the right fielder. Almost went over his head, and it would have rolled to the wall and scored two, and instead we didn't get any," Organ Mountain head coach Alan Edmonson said. "That just seemed like our luck all game. Both teams had seven base hits. They scored five runs; we scored one."

Randy Bailey pitched 6.1 innings for Organ Mountain in the loss. Maddux Edmonson, Tyce McPhearson, Xavier Casas, Estevan Lara and Matthew Hall all recorded base hits, although no Knight had more than one hit.

Organ Mountain's loss concludes a historic season for the Knights in which they posted their first 20-win season since 2013 and captured the district title, defeating all three other major Las Cruces high schools in regular-season series. Centennial's loss marked only its seventh loss of the season, although their campaign is not over yet.
