Organizers expect a large crowd for a pro-choice march Sunday in downtown Wausau

WAUSAU – A group of activists is planning a pro-choice protest for 3 p.m. Sunday at the 400 Block downtown to protest the overturning of Roe v. Wade.

The event, titled "Pro-Choice March: We Won’t Go Back! Bans Off Our Bodies!", will feature a six- or seven-block march and speakers including Mayor Katie Rosenberg and others, said organizer Jaxon Seeger.

Seeger said the march started as a protest against Roe v. Wade being overturned, but they are also protesting other recent Supreme Court decisions and how justices have mentioned banning contraception and gay marriage.

The U.S. Supreme Court announced on June 24 that abortion is not considered a right in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization ruling. This means Wisconsin will return to using its 1849 abortion ban.

Seeger said protesters should bring their own signs as there will be limited sign-making supplies at the protest and to leave unnecessary bikes, scooters and pets at home since it will be a large event.

Over 1,700 people have responded as "going" or "interested" to the Facebook event. Seeger, who also planned a Wausau protest after George Floyd's murder in May 2020, said he expects at least 1,000 people to show up.

"For the George Floyd March ... we had almost 2,000 people show up," Seeger said. "We have the same response via social media as we did with that march."
