New restaurant bringing Latin American flavors to downtown Fall River

There's a new Latin American restaurant coming to South Main Street.

Origen Bar & Grill — Origen is Spanish for "origin" — is gearing up for its debut in early April.

Owners Elvis Verdezoto and Nick Melgar, the latter of whom also owns the Taqueria El Habanero on North Main Street, are hoping to add more diversity to the city's food scene.

"People are excited but they want something different," Verdezoto said.

A Fall River babysitter raped 2 kids and made child porn. She was sent to federal prison.

A Fall River woman will spend the next 25 years in prison for repeatedly molesting two children she babysat — a 7-year-old and a 2-year-old toddler — and using them to produce child porn she shared with a boyfriend.

Nichole Cyr, 27, of Fall River was sentenced Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Boston to 25 years imprisonment and five years of supervised release after pleading guilty to two charges of sexual exploitation of children.

Test openings at Veterans Memorial Bridge to cause delays

Test openings for the Veterans Memorial Bridge began last week and were expected to continue this week.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation will be conducting multiple scheduled daytime test openings for the drawbridge located on Route 6 over the Taunton River, between Fall River and Somerset.

You're all set if you're crossing the bridge on weekends; the test openings are scheduled from Monday to Friday.

Route 79 demolition opens up waterfront views

This past week, construction work on the Route 79 project was opening up waterfront views that haven't been seen in almost 50 years.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation announced that they were demolishing the elevated high-speed expressway along the waterfront, including bridges.

This phase of the project will reduce the route 79 expressway to a flat surface, and soon, people on the northbound side of Davol Street will see an unobstructed view of the Fall River waterfront for the first time since 1976.

Why are swans dying in Swansea?

The state is investigating what caused several swans to die recently in Swansea.

“They don’t look visibly attacked,” said Lisa White, the town’s animal control officer. “They just appear to be passing away.”

As of Wednesday, six swans were dead, and five of them had washed up over a number of days in the Compton’s Corner area of the the Cole River in Ocean Grove.
