There's quite a bit to do this weekend in and near South Bend, with lots of new, original performances scheduled. But traditional arts also offer fun. For more activities, see The Tribune's online events calendar, too.

IUSB students premiere original musical ‘Assembly’

SOUTH BEND — Graduate and undergraduate students in the Raclin School of the Arts present “Assembly” at 7 p.m. March 10 and 11 at Indiana University South Bend’s Northside Hall.

Directed by IUSB music graduate students Carlee Baldwin and Addie Pfeiffer and written by Baldwin, the musical follows six friends who reunite at their 10-year high school reunion.

Although everything may seem fine on the surface, a painful past and powerful memories begin to emerge. As the evening progresses, many relive good times, some face harsh realities, and a few discover new things about themselves.

Performing Arts Media Festival holds multiple events around South Bend

SOUTH BEND — The Performing Arts Media Festival presents an evening of performances and visual art at 7 p.m. March 10 at LangLab, 1302 High St.

Now in its seventh year, the festival showcases audio-visual performance works in which artists working with emerging technologies cross disciplinary boundaries to create new works of integrated media.

The event at LangLab event features a combination of local artists and international guests with screenings, installations and live concert sets.

Artists include IUSB’s Audio Visual Collective performing Wesley S. Uchiyama-Penix’s “The Border of Wind” and screenings of Addison Bird’s “Sticking Your Head in the Rabbit Hole,” Zhang Yinan’s “Rain-ball,” Austin Yip’s “This is All About That Monster,” Livvy94’s “Once Upon a Rush,” Mark Sniadecki’s “Nematodes,” Andre Perim’s “ID,” Jérémie Martineau’s “Distractions, Horizons,” Maura McDonnell and Cobi van Tonder’s “Digital Alchemy,” and Kian Ravaei’s “Outcry.”

There will be solo performances by Alex Lough (“Assemblage #4”), Edmar Soria [“Homeomorphism Phi(0)”] and tiainen.xyz (“Impromptu”).

Also, the Minniapolis-based duo John C.S. Keston and Mike Hodnick perform their work “SYNTAX,” Livvy94 (with SNES) and Eric Souther and Jason Mullen perform a new work entitled “Ultra Nervous System.”

Nick LeJeune’s reactive projection installation, “Indiscrete Entities,” will run throughout the event.

Finally, After Ours (Eli Kahn and Arthur Schroder) headlines with a set of music and with visuals created by Kahn and cued by Ryan Olivier.

• A concert of media works featuring Ensemble Concept 21 (EC/21) at 7 p.m. March 9 at IUSB’s Northside Hall. The program includes Ryan Olivier’s “NST: Non-Sustainable Token, Aaron Israel Levin’s “This is the one with the videogame violence,” Rodrigo Pascale’s “Malleable,” Antonio Sanz Escallón’s “Branches,” Cecilia Suhr performing her “Paradigm Shift: Tapping into the Quantum Field,” fixed media works by David Bird, Patrick Reed and Jae-Eun Sun, SiHyun Uhm, and Bret Battey. as well as documentation from Natasha Bogojevich’s live score to Lisa Barcy’s film “The Ephemeral Orphanage.”

• The keynote address by Sabina Covarrubias at noon March 10 at Northside Hall. She will present a live performance work with visuals in multichannel surround sound and be available to discuss her work after the performance.

• An installation continues at the South Bend Museum of Art, 120 S. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., through March 19. Hours are noon to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays.

• The festival concludes with Kari Francis’ “POSTLUDE: A Photosonic Mass” at 8 p.m. March 27 at the University of Notre Dame’s O’Neill Hall. The piece explores themes of ritual, space and musical assemblage by connecting different settings of the Catholic Mass by Satie, Rautavaara, Pärt, Snider, Byrd and Bray into a single ceremony. It features lighting design by Alex Christie and electronic interludes by IUSB’s Audio Visual Collective.

Kennedy’s Kitchen gets St. Patrick’s Day started early at The Rees in Plymouth

PLYMOUTH — Kennedy’s Kitchen performs at 7:30 p.m. March 10 at The Rees Theatre, 100 N. Michigan St.

Based in South Bend, the traditional Irish music group plays pub songs, sing-a-longs and dance tunes; tells stories; and gives recitations with an instrumentation that includes fiddle, flute, whistle, mandolin, tenor banjo, bouzouki, guitar, bass and vocal harmonies.

Guinness will be available for purchase.

Goshen College presents 10th annual ‘Goshen Monologues’

GOSHEN — The 10th annual “Goshen Monologues” takes place at 7 p.m. March 11 in the sanctuary of Goshen College’s church.

Goshen College faculty, staff and student women and nonbinary people will perform true stories written anonymously by women and nonbinary students, faculty and staff about mental health, body image, sexuality, trauma and relationships.

Utilizing both group performance and individual monologues, this year’s set of monologues explores themes of gender identity, relationships, sexual violence and mental health.

This performance contains potentially triggering content and is not appropriate for young children.

Elkhart’s First Presbyterian offers workshop on Ukrainian egg decoration

ELKHART — First Presbyterian Church present a workshop on Pyansky — the art of Ukrainian egg decoration — from 2 to 5 p.m. March 12 at 200 E. Beardsley Ave.

Pastor Sally Wicks has practiced the ancient art of Ukrainian Easter egg decoration for years.

In a press release, she said, “The egg decorating is done on raw eggs with metal tipped styluses warmed by candle flame and dipped in beeswax. The designs are then drawn on the eggs and dipped in successive dyes to create a truly extraordinary egg.”

Attendees should bring a soft hand towel or kitchen towel to cradle and protect the egg and a small padded box or egg carton in which to transport the egg home.

Special snacks and Ukrainian treats will be available, and donations will be accepted for aid for Ukrainian refugees and war victims and aid to Syria and Turkey earthquake victims.

Admission is free.

Attendance is limited to 100 participants and is open to children, youth and adults.
