Expect a clash in the tranches Thursday night when Timber Creek travels to Winter Park for a matchup of Orlando area top 10 teams at Showalter Field.
The Wolves, ranked No. 6 in the Sentinel Super 16, have rushed for 15 touchdowns this season behind a solid group on the offensive line. No. 8 Winter Park has held five teams to 10 points or less with Vinson Sneed, Keyondrae Jones and Evan Warner helping form a defensive line that has been hard to penetrate.
Timber Creek ended a four-game skid in the rivalry with a 35-28 win over the Wildcats last season. Thursday’s game will be streamed online by Varsity Sports Network.
The Wolves relied on junior wideout and punt returner Ryan Campbell last week to put the team in scoring position on three touchdowns drives during a 22-21 come-from-behind win at Oviedo. Campbell caught the go-ahead two-point conversion pass with 1:06 remaining and shared Orlando Touchdown Club player of the week honors with Seminole High’s Jimmy Horn.
“He’s really had a great year for us,” said Timber Creek coach Jimmy Buckridge. “The nice thing about last week was that we didn’t play extremely well, but we still got the win. We’ve just got to make sure we come out this week realizing that we have to play football right from the get-go.”
Oviedo plays at Hagerty in one of several area rivalry games in Week 9 of the regular season. That list includes Ocoee at No. 13 West Orange and Colonial at Orlando University. Oviedo has won three in a row vs. Hagerty and 10 of 13 cross-town matchups since 2007.
The Battle of College Park between No. 4 Edgewater and No. 12 Bishop Moore was canceled late Wednesday afternoon. All varsity and junior varsity football activities at Bishop Moore have been canceled until further notice “due to a positive COVID-19 case,” according to a notice that went out to parents.
No. 1 Jones and No. 9 DeLand face off against defending state champions on Friday. And No. 16 Wekiva plays at Lakeland, which won the Class 7A state title in 2018.
Jones, ranked No. 7 among all classifications by FloridaHSFootball.com, is on the road against three-time defending Class 3A state champion Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna, the No. 3-ranked team in the state.
DeLand hosts 7A state champion Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas at 6 p.m. at Spec Martin Stadium. Aquinas dropped from No. 1 in the all-class rankings to No. 9 after losing 17-10 vs. Cardinal Gibbons.
Below is a look at what to watch for and the predicted winners for games involving area programs. Teams are listed with current records and area Super 16 rankings. Games kick off at 7 p.m. unless otherwise noted.
