Orlando City earns first franchise win over Atlanta United

Orlando City has chased a milestone during the past four years — a win over its rival Atlanta United.

It’s been a rough road for the Lions. Seven meetings ended in two draws and five losses, with four defeats coming on their home pitch in Orlando. Atlanta United star Josef Martínez made a sport out of teasing Orlando City fans on social media. Others around the league debated whether it was even a rivalry given the lopsided record.

But on Saturday, the Lions (4-2-2, 14 points) beat Atlanta United (3-4-0, 9 points) for the first time in club history, notching a decisive 3-1 victory.

The fact that Orlando City while starting its secondary lineup — a mix of young talent that rose to the occasion — was a bonus.
