For months, Orlando Health and United Healthcare Insurance have been in negotiations about pricing for certain services. However, those negotiations have stalled.

If an agreement isn’t reached by Tuesday, lots of people are going to be impacted.

At this point, both Orlando Health and UHC are pointing the blame at each other as to why these negotiations are stalled. In the meantime, people are scrambling to try and figure out how to get critical care before that deadline.

For the last decade, doctors, surgeries and more than a dozen medications have kept Victor Collazo’s failing liver in check. Most of those doctors are at Orlando Health. He’s covered by United.

“I’m going to have to pay out out-of-network,” Collazo said. “I can do that once or twice with my doctors but I can’t afford to do that for all of my doctors.”

Right now, Collazo is stocking up on medications and trying to delay appointments until he can enroll with a different insurance provider.

But since he’s on Medicare, he’ll have to wait months for enrollment.

“Its hard enough being sick,” Collazo said. “It’s worse being real sick and not knowing how you’re going to get care properly.”

Collazo said both sides “need to fix it.”

“For many of us, it’s a life and death kind of thing,” he said. “If I don’t take these medications, I have no idea how long I would last with my non-working liver.”

There is an option for patients already receiving care to go through an appeals process and get continued coverage. Collazo said he does plan on pursuing this option.
