Orlando International Airport expects busiest travel day during Memorial Day weekend

Thousands of passengers are expected to pass through the Orlando International Airport for Memorial Day.

Airport officials said Saturday will be the busiest day of travel for the holiday with 170,000 passengers.

Officials expect about 1.1 million people to pass through over a seven-day period.

Because of the increase in estimated travelers, OIA said the most significant recommendation is for travelers to arrive at the airport three hours before their flight.

Paula Wong followed that suggestion and said it made her time in the airport fly by.

“I got here three-and-a-half hours ahead of time so I could check a bag through Southwest and it took five minutes,” she said. “I’m sitting here because it doesn’t look like there’s a line for TSA Pre-check. I’m in shock.”

Other travelers said their experience during the holiday weekend has been smooth, and Wong said she doesn’t mind waiting for her flight if it makes the process easier.

“We’re going to hang out, do some jogging, sit-ups, (and) pushups,” Rick Flores said.

The airport also suggested some tips to get through TSA security quickly, including wearing slip-on shoes, keeping your jewelry on and taking large electronics out of bags.
