New Orleans is gearing up to host Super Bowl LIX

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — With Super Bowl LVIII behind us, leaders with the City of New Orleans are looking ahead to Super Bowl LIX, which is set to take over the Crescent City.

Mayor LaToya Cantrell, New Orleans Saints and Pelicans Owner Gayle Benson, Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser and Super Bowl LIX Host Committee Chair Marcus Brown attended the NFL’s Super Bowl Handoff ceremony in Las Vegas on Monday, Feb. 12.

At the ceremony, Benson stated that New Orleans is the best place to host a major event, especially the Super Bowl.

“Simply put, it’s what we do,” said Benson.

Super Bowl LIX will mark the city’s 11th time hosting the game and the eighth time happening at the Caesars Superdome.

“Hosting Super Bowl LIX will be another invaluable opportunity to show off what makes our city and state such a unique and celebrated host venue,” said Benson.

Nungesser said it’s easy to remember what happens on the field, but it’s the team behind the scenes that works to make the Super Bowl special.

“Our renovated Superdome, our Louisiana seafood, our music but most importantly it’s our people. We treat strangers like family. You’ll leave with a friend for life and that will make Louisiana a special host destination,” said Nungesser.

While in Vegas, Cantrell was able to view the playbook of all pre-game measures ahead of the big game.

“The NFL has always embraced the culture of our city,” said Cantrell. “We are looking so forward to showcasing our resiliency, our sustainability, and most importantly, the people of our great city rooted in the culture of the city of New Orleans,”

For the first time in NFL history, league officials chose a local to create the logo for the upcoming event. NFL leaders selected the Queen of her Black Masking Indian Tribe, Tahj Williams.

Following in her tradition of hand-beading her Indian costumes, Williams used red, green, yellow, white and silver beads to build the logo.

Hosting Super Bowl LIX will tie New Orleans with Miami for the most time hosting one of the biggest sporting events in the world.

“We are always looking for ways to bring Louisiana to the national and international stages. From participating in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade to the Rose Parade, this is yet another way to put New Orleans and our great state on the world stage,” added Nungesser.
