Orphaned Raccoon Befriends Two Dogs... And Thinks She's One of Them

Pumpkin the raccoon was just one month old when she was abandoned by her mother - but one year on, and she's part of a whole new family.

After she fell from a tree in the Bahamas - leaving her with a broken hind leg - her mother didn't return and the local shelter was unable to take her. So nearby residents Laura and William Young took her in and nursed her back to health.

Within weeks, Pumpkin had formed a bond with the couple's two rescue dogs, Toffee and Oreo. The three have a ball together.

The owners told INSIDE EDITION: “Pumpkin considers the dogs her mums! She respects them when they have had enough rough play and she loves to cuddle next to them when she is tired!”

The owners added that she is very intelligent and entertaining, and loves to play with the pups.

Laura and William say they are lucky that there is no rabies in the Bahamas and there are no restrictions on having raccoons.

They say that Pumpkin has had all her vaccines and has been spayed. But they want everyone know that raccoons aren't pets and should be left alone in their natural habitats. Yet since Pumpkin didn't get the chance at first, they are making sure she has the best life possible.

The owners say: “She is a cheeky little thing but we love her dearly!”
