Orrville opts in on Ohio law allowing residential fireworks

KEY ACTION Agreed to allow citizens of Orrville to ignite consumer grade fireworks such as bottle rockets and Roman candles on their property during the week of July 4.

DISCUSSION Starting July 1, Ohio law allows common fireworks to be discharged on designated days unless local governments choose to opt out or impose specific restrictions.

After going through three readings, City Council approved a new ordinance allowing residents to enjoy discharging fireworks on their properties. Council member Rick Aspiras Jr. said after discussing it with the Orrville Fire Department, they agreed to limit it to July 3, 4 and 5 as well as the first Friday, Saturday and Sunday before and after the Fourth of July holiday between the hours of 8 a.m. and 12 a.m.

OTHER BUSINESS

  • The American Municipal Power (AMP) scholarship was awarded at Monday's meeting to Orrville High School senior Jayne Wallace. The award was given by AMP representative Jay Myers.

  • Agreed to move on with the sidewalk phase four project in the interest of safety after listening to public comments from residents Lew Fleege and Tom Hochstetler. However, the city will provide financial aid to support property owners dealing with financial stress, and the city also will minimize the number of trees that need to be removed for the project.

  • Approved purchasing two new Ford trucks for the cemetery, and the Service Department.

  • Mayor Dave Handwerk announced the month of May as electric safety month.

  • Orrville High School science teacher Jim Duxbury has been selected as the 2021 Paul L. Powell Citizen of the Year.

  • Lineworker Ray Fiscus from the Electricity Department is the Employee of the Month.

  • The Parks and Recreation committee met on May 9 with professional skateboarders and skate shop owners to gain input for a skateboard park. The project received a $12,000 grant from the Wayne County Community Foundation.

  • New security cameras will be installed in Orr Park.
