Orrville school board accepts its share of Juul e-cigarette lawsuit settlement

Thursday, March 16 meeting KEY ACTION Approved the proposed settlement of the Juul litigation.

DISCUSSION The electronic cigarette company agreed to pay $438.5 million to schools in Ohio and 32 other states and stop marketing its vaping products to children to settle the case. Orrville City Schools accepted its share in the settlement — $20,000.

In a previous Daily Record story, Superintendent Jon Ritchie said the monetary awards from the settlement will be paid half in the fall and the rest will come over the next four years.

  • The Orrville Middle School fifth- and sixth-grade family dinner is March 23. Principal, Dave Sovacool said more than 130 are registered to attend.

  • The Science Olympiad team qualified for the state tournament, after finishing third in the Akron Regional Science Olympiad.

  • Orrville Elementary School raised $4,693 for the Heart Challenge children's cause.

  • Family Literacy Nights will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on March 27 and March 28 at Orrville Elementary.

  • The Makers Club will head to Wadsworth Airport on April 4 where students will see helicopters and small planes.

  • Orrville High School starts a new program called Rising, which aims to help struggling students stay on track for graduation.

  • Orrville Elementary School Principal Beverly Waseman was recognized as the Character Employee of the Month from the Heartland Education Community.
