Orthodox Serbs mark Epiphany with a swimming race

The ritual commemorates the baptism of Jesus Christ in the Jordan River, according to Orthodox Christian tradition.

The length of the race is 33 metres (0.02 miles), one for each year of Jesus' life.

Others had to watch from behind a fence at the Ciganlija Lake, which residents call "the Belgrade Sea".

One of the swimmers, Igor Djokic, said it was his honour to take part in the traditional race, adding that he swam because of his faith.

In previous years, the celebrations attracted hundreds of people willing to take a dip in the cold water.

Sometimes the track has to be cut out of the ice, but the weather this time was kind to the swimmers, with the temperature of the air slightly above 32F.
