OSAA state championships: 10 Eugene-area swimmers to watch
The OSAA swimming state championships are Friday and Saturday at the Tualatin Hills Aquatic Center in Beaverton.
The competition begins at 9 a.m. Friday with Class 4A/3A/2A/1A. Class 5A starts at 1:45 p.m., and Class 6A begins at 6:30 p.m.
On Saturday, competition begins at 8:15 a.m. Friday with Class 4A/3A/2A/1A, Class 5A starting at 1:15 p.m., and Class 6A at 6:30 p.m.
Here is a look at 10 Eugene-area swimmers to watch during the state championships, categorized by classification.
Claire Sheerin (senior), South Eugene - Class 6A
The senior will compete in three events and will be a top-three seed in two events —100 yard butterfly and the 100 yard breaststroke with times of 56.45 and 1:04.79, respectfully.
Sheerin will also be competing in South Eugene's 200 yard medley relay team that has the sixth-best time (1:50.98).
Events (seed) — 100 yard butterfly (3rd), 100 yard breaststroke (3rd) and 200 yard medley relay (6th).
Burke Sherman (freshman), South Eugene - Class 6A
Sherman will compete in the 100 yard backstroke with a sixth-best time of 53.30 and the 200 yard individual medley with a ninth best time of 1:58.15.
The freshman will also be a part of the Axe's 200 yard freestyle relay team that has a ninth-best time of 1:32.26 and the individual medley relay team that is among the top-15 with a time of 1:43.91.
Events (seed) — 100 yard backstroke (6th), 200 yard individual medley (9th), 200 yard freestyle relay (9th) and individual medley relay (13th).
Franco Carrai (senior), South Eugene - Class 6A
Carrai will compete in the 50 yard freestyle and will be a top-10 seed in that event with a time of 22.38.
He has the 17th-best time (50.28) in the 6A 100 yard freestyle.
The senior will compete in the Axe's 200 yard freestyle relay team that has a ninth-best time of 1:32.26 and the 200 yard medley relay team that has a top-15 time of 1:43.91.
Events (seed) — 50 yard freestyle (8th), 200 yard freestyle relay (9th), 200 yard medley relay (13th), 100 yard freestyle (17th).
Jossy St. Clair (junior), Willamette - Class 6A
St. Clair will compete in two events for the Wolverines.
The junior has the sixth-best time (58.84) in the 6A 100 yard backstroke and the 14th-best time (55.75) in the 100 yard freestyle.
Events (seed) — 100 yard backstroke (6th), 100 yard freestyle (14th).
Kelsey Wasikowski (senior), Churchill - Class 5A
Wasikowski will compete in two individual events but not the 100 yard breaststroke where she set the 5A state record in 2022 with a time of 1:02.73.
The senior has the second-best time (2:07.99) in the 5A 200 individual medley and the fourth-best time (5:12.14) in the 500 yard freestyle.
Wasikowski will also compete in the Lancers' 200 yard medley relay team that has a fifth-best time of 1:55.86 as well as the 400 yard freestyle relay that has a fifth-best time of 3:53.08.
Events (seed) — 200 yard individual medley (2nd), 500 yard freestyle (4th), 200 yard medley relay (5th), 400 yard freestyle relay (5th).
Lauren Larsen (senior), Churchill - Class 5A
Larsen will compete in two individual events and will enter as a top-10 seed in both.
She has the fourth-best time (54.58) in the 100 yard freestyle and the seventh-best time (59.75) in the 100 yard backstroke.
The senior will also be a part of the Lancers' 200 yard medley relay team that has a fifth-best time of 1:55.86 and the 400 yard freestyle relay that a fifth-best time of 3:53.08.
Events (seed) — 100 yard freestyle (4th), 100 yard backstroke (7th), 200 yard medley relay (5th), 400 yard freestyle relay (5th).
Quinn Devenport (freshman), Thurston - Class 5A
Devenport is a top-10 seed in two events for the Colts.
The freshman has the ninth-best time (2:13.09) in the 200 yard individual medley and the ninth-best time (5:23.43) in the 500 yard freestyle.
Events (seed) — 200 yard individual medley (9th), 500 yard freestyle (9th).
Kassandra Mclennan (senior), Springfield - Class 5A
Mclennan will compete in two events for the Millers.
The senior has an eighth-best time (1:02.04) in the 100 yard backstroke and a ninth-best time (2:20.54) in the 200 yard individual medley.
Mclennan will also be a part of the Millers' 200 yard freestyle relay team that has an 11th-best time of 1:50.75.
Events (seed) — 100 yard backstroke (8th), 200 yard individual medley (9th), 200 yard freestyle (11th).
Emily Ashton (senior), Churchill - Class 5A
Ashton will compete in two events for the Lancers.
The senior has a seventh-best time (1:04.17) in the 100 yard butterfly and an 11th-best time (2:27.42) in the 200 yard individual medley.
Ashton will also compete in the Lancers' 200 yard medley relay team that has a fifth-best time of 1:55.86.
Events (seed) — 100 yard butterfly (7th), 200 yard individual medley (11th), 200 yard medley relay (5th), 400 yard freestyle relay (5th).
Kassidy Poetzl (senior), Cottage Grove - Class 4A/3A/2A/1A
Poetzl will compete in two events for the Lions.
The senior has a ninth-best time (5:46.66) in the 500 yard freestyle and an 11th-best time (2:10.25) in the 200 yard freestyle.
Poetzl will also be a part of the Lions' 200 yard freestyle relay team that has a sixth-best time of 1:53.03 and the 400 yard freestyle relay that has an eighth-best time of 4:13.21.
