The Oscar nominees' best fashion moments of awards season

Predicting Oscar fashion is a losing game. We could mull over whose stylist has been spotted at whose runway show and which actresses have which designer contracts for hours but it would all lead us back to the only thing we do know: What the nominees have been wearing this season.

The 10 actresses who are up for Best Actress and Best Actress in a Supporting Role have been hitting red carpets since September 2019 — between the film festivals, the premieres, and the first round of awards shows, there have been plenty of hints as to what styles we might see at the Dolby Theatre on Sunday. We’ve picked out our personal favorite looks from each star so that you can make your own predictions.

Lady Gaga (Best Actress nominee for A Star Is Born)

The Venice Film Festival: The singer brought the drama in this fluffy, feathery Valentino couture gown that can only be described as voluminous.

The SAG Awards: She sported a plunging, white Christian Dior dress and her most dramatic lip of award season.

The A Star Is Born Los Angeles premiere: Gaga went haute couture again, this time in a gown by Givenchy. Some say it was a nod to vintage Barbra Streisand and her 1976 version of the film, in which her character Esther accepts a Grammy in a silver cape.

Glenn Close (Best Actress nominee for The Wife)

The Critics’ Choice Awards: Close wore a snazzy Gabriela Hearst creation to collect the award for Best Actress, which she shared with Lady Gaga.

Toronto International Film Festival: The actress chose a black Zac Posen number for The Wife‘s first big debut.

The SAG Awards: She suited up thanks to Ralph Lauren — and also donned her late grandmother’s wedding ring for the occasion.

Melissa McCarthy (Best Actress nominee for Can You Ever Forgive Me?)

The SAG Awards: The Can You Ever Forgive Me? star paired a glittering Lorane dress and Chopard diamond earrings with…$100 Sam Edelman sandals.

The BAFTA Tea Party: Her black lace frock doesn’t give any indication as to what she might wear to the Oscars, but we think we can guess how she’s going to do her hair.

Toronto International Film Festival: McCarthy went glam in a flowy purple gown at the premiere of Can You Ever Forgive Me?

Olivia Colman (Best Actress nominee for The Favourite)

The British Academy Film Awards: There’s nothing more English than this classy silk dress.

The Golden Globes: Her partially sheer Stella McCartney gown is nothing like Queen Anne’s wardrobe.

Toronto International Film Festival: This was technically something she wore for a lowly photocall — not a premiere or gala — but this black jumpsuit may be our favourite look of Colman’s award season.

Yalitza Aparicio (Best Actress nominee for Roma)

The Governors Awards: The Roma actress may be new to the film industry but she knows how to rock a frock. This hot pink Sachin & Babi gown proves our point.

The Venice Film Festival: Aparicio gave a subtle nod to her Mexican heritage in this lacy number to mark one of her first big public appearances.

The Golden Globes: For her first major awards show, she wore a mini-crown. This is what Hollywood dreams are made of.

Amy Adams (Best Supporting Actress nominee for Vice)

The Golden Globes: You can never go wrong with an off-the-shoulder Calvin Klein creation.

The SAG Awards: The double nominee (for Vice and Sharp Objects) turned heads in Celine by Hedi Slimane.

The Vice Los Angeles premiere: Adams went red (in Chloé) for Republicans, obviously.

Emma Stone (Best Supporting Actress nominee for The Favourite)

The Favourite London premiere: No, that’s not an awards statuette, that’s Emma Stone in Louis Vuitton.

The Venice Film Festival: If we were betting people, we’d put our money on this custom Louis Vuitton as the best predictor of what we might see Stone wear on Oscar Sunday.

The SAG Awards: The actress completed her fashion trifecta with more Louis Vuitton — this time opting for a gold embellished blouse and black trousers.

Regina King (Best Supporting Actress nominee for If Beale Street Could Talk)

Toronto International Film Festival: King stunned in a form-fitting royal blue gown at the world premiere of If Beale Street Could Talk.

The BAFTA Awards: We are not worthy of the actress’ hot pink Atelier Versace number.

The Golden Globes: King dazzled in a floor-length Alberta Ferretti gown to accept her big award.

Marina de Tavira (Best Supporting Actress nominee for Roma)

Venice Film Festival: The Roma actress went pretty in pink for the Netflix flick’s debut.

The Directors’ Guild Awards: Giambattista Valli served de Tavira very well.

The Critics’ Choice Awards: Roma won Best Picture and her Vivienne Westwood dressed pleased almost as much.

Rachel Weisz (Best Supporting Actress nominee for The Favourite)

The Gotham Awards: Weisz received a special tribute at the féte but her Michael Kors Collection dress deserved its own tribute.

The SAG Awards: O-M-G it’s Givenchy!

The Favourite London premiere: The actress sparkled in Alexander McQueen. This is how you do sequins.
