Oscar shortlists snubs: Michael Moore doc 'Fahrenheit 11/9,' Tim McGraw's 'Gravity'

The Academy announced its shortlist of eligible Oscar nominations in nine categories including best song and best documentary. Michael Moore and Tim McGraw didn't make the cut. Who did?

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences narrowed down the field in nine categories Monday by announcing their shortlists for the 91st Oscars on Monday.

The lists signify the contenders now eligible for Oscar nominations in categories including best documentary and best original song. They also showed which movies and songs have been overlooked.

In documentary films, Michael Moore's politically-charged "Fahrenheit 11/9" was passed over and will not compete for an Oscar. "Quincy," the Netflix bio-doc of music legend Quincy Jones, directed by his daughter Rashida Jones and Alan Hicks, was left off, as well as the Aretha Franklin documentary “Amazing Grace.”

Director Kevin Macdonald’s examination of pop idol Whitney Houston (“Whitney"), along with director Marina Zenovich’s “Robin Williams: Come Inside My Mind" didn't make the cut.

In the best original song category, Tim McGraw's “Gravity” from the adventure climbing documentary "Free Solo" fell short of the shortlist. Kesha's "Here Comes The Change" from "On the Basis of Sex" was was denied as was Annie Lennox's “Requiem for a Private War” from the film "A Private War." (And believe it or not: Pitbull's version of Toto's "Africa" called "Ocean to Ocean" also isn't in Oscar contention.)

The "Transformers" franchise will not vie for a visual effects award in 2019, as the upcoming "Bumblebee" did not make the shortlist. Likewise, the upcoming DC Comics film "Aquaman," "Mission: Impossible – Fallout," and "Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald" were passed over.

Nominations for the 91st Academy Awards will be announced Jan. 22.
