Oscar Smith defensive back Sherrod Covil commits to Clemson

Oscar Smith’s Sherrod Covil, a junior defensive back, committed to play football at Clemson on Thursday.

Covil, who helped the Tigers win the Class 6 state championship last month, made his announcement on rivals.com. The 6-foot, 190-pounder is rated a four-star recruit by most recruiting services and was named an Under Armour All-American and first-team All-Tidewater.

Covil picked Clemson after mulling more than 40 scholarship offers. He had 26 tackles, three interceptions and returned two INTs for touchdowns during his junior season.

Covil is the latest member of Oscar Smith’s state championship team to make his college choice. Quarterback Ethan Vasko recently committed to Old Dominion.

This is a developing story.
