Everything Everywhere All at Once dominated the 95th Academy Awards, which were held on Sunday night at Los Angeles’ Dolby Theatre.
Michelle Yeoh took home the Best Actress prize, becoming the first Asian woman and only second woman of colour to win the trophy. The film also won Best Picture, and Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for writer/directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert.
Brendan Fraser cemented his comeback with a Best Actor win for The Whale, while Everything Everywhere stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Ke Huy Quan picked up Best Supporting Actress and Best Supporting Actor, respectively.
The night was not without controversy, with criticism aimed at Jimmy Kimmel’s interview with Malala and a painful encounter between model Ashley Graham and an “obnoxious” Hugh Grant.
Many also felt that Angela Bassett deserved the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. The award instead went to Jamie Lee Curtis, prompting what many viewers described as a “real” reaction from Bassett.
There were plenty of bold looks on the “champagne” carpet this year, including Rihanna who turned up in a T-shirt, trainers and bucket hat.

Voices: Why Chris Rock is wrong about Jada Pinkett Smith
03:39 , Tom Murray
“I don’t care if Rock wasn’t aware of Pinkett Smith’s alopecia beforehand; he had about as much right to make fun of a Black woman’s lack of hair as Smith had the right to walk up and slap Rock across the face,” Inga Parkel writes for The Independent.
“A year later, claiming that his GI Jane remark was intended to shut down a so-called feud she ‘started’ years ago is not the succinct comeback he may have intended. I’m sorry to tell you, Chris Rock, but I would argue that you didn’t ‘finish it’, Will Smith finished it for you.

If Michelle Yeoh’s Oscar speech jibe was directed at Don Lemon, the CNN anchor took no notice.
During her acceptance speech, Yeoh said: “Ladies, don’t ever let anyone tell you you are ever past your prime!”
Lemon recently came under fire for suggesting that women were in their “prime” in their “twenties and thirties and maybe forties”.

Notable names left out of the Oscars 2023 In Memoriam segment
Monday 13 March 2023 23:40 , Inga Parkel
Each year, the Oscars are known for including an In Memoriam section, where they feature names of those in the industry who have died in the past year.
This year, names such as actors Olivia Newton-John, Kirstie Alley and Robbie Coltrane were honoured in the segment.
While there was a short disclaimer at the end of the video, acknowledging that there were additional names than were included in the short clip, numerous fans criticised the awards show for the omission of some key figures.

Which celebrities skipped the 2023 Oscars?
Monday 13 March 2023 19:40 , Inga Parkel
It may seem blasphemous for a celebrity to outright skip the Oscars, especially if they’re nominated in some of the biggest categories.
Yet, that’s exactly what some nominees, including Tom Cruise and director James Cameron, did. They must’ve been pretty certain they weren’t winning in the main categories...

Most underrated Oscars 2023 films
Monday 13 March 2023 18:40 , Inga Parkel
While it’s absolutely thrilling to see deserving films such as Everything Everywhere All at Once and All Quiet on the Western Front receive tremendous recognition, there are a few 2023 Oscars films that I think are equally as remarkable.
Here is a list of some of the films that must be on your radar and added to your watch list asap:
Marcel the Shell with Shoes On– A heartwarming and precious look at the importance of family from a one-inch animated talking shell, voiced by stand-up comedian Jenny Slate. You are sure to be blown away by the movie’s poignant message.
Close – This Belgian film about the brutal consequences of two young boys whose close friendship is ridiculed by their peers, will surely bring you to tears.
The Quiet Girl – An Irish adaptation of Claire Keegan’s short story of the same name, this film follows a nine-year-old girl who goes to live with distant relatives for a summer, where she learns a new way of life.
RRR – The Tollywood film (Telegu-language movie) has received significant popularity with its now Oscar-winning original song “Natu Natu”, yet it still remains largely unseen. This action-drama is a masterpiece of cinema that tells the tale of two legendary revolutionaries and their fight against 1920s British colonists.
Living – Perhaps a bit of a late release in comparison to its competition, the drama starring Billy Nighy serves as an adaptation of 1952 Japanese film Ikiru. It centres on a lonely civil servant who receives a medical diagnosis which puts his life on a short timeline. However, after connecting with a local young and vibrant woman, he learns to reframe his life’s ambition.
The Woman King – Deemed one of the Oscar’s biggest snubs, this action drama, led by Viola Davis, is about a group of all-female African warriors in the 1800s tasked with training new recruits to protect their kingdom against a foreign enemy determined with destroying their way of life.
Who was the woman in the big white dress at the Oscars?
Monday 13 March 2023 17:40 , Inga Parkel
While many of us might be bummed we were only able to tune into the Oscars live broadcast, rather than experience the excitement in person, there are some positives to this.
Number one: our views of the stage were unobstructed! The same can’t be said for some audience members...
One woman made headlines for her beautiful white dress, although perhaps not for the reasons she might have hoped.
Wearing a gorgeous number, outfitted with a full-on shoulder flare (?) , Nigerian singer-songwriter Tems, who was nominated for her contribution as a songwriter on “Lift Me Up”, the song featured in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, became a major talking point of the night.
Twitter users couldn’t help but point out that her dress completely blocked the view of the stage from those sitting behind her.

And in a little bit of late-night heartbreak, Vulture is reporting that the Banshees of Inisherin donkey brought on stage by Jimmy Kimmel during the ceremony was not Jenny the Donkey from the film but an impostor! “It was just a random donkey,” an unverified source told the publication. For shame!

A nice moment from one of the Daniels’ many speeches tonight involved Everything Everywhere co-director Daniel Scheinert calling out the protests and hysteria around drag.

One of the funniest gags from tonight’s ceremony was Jimmy Kimmel reigniting his comic feud with Matt Damon, after asking Jessica Chastain whether it was tricky working with him on The Martian as he “smells like dog medicine”.

Many are asking about a number of major stars left out of the ceremony’s In Memoriam segment, including Paul Sorvino, Anne Heche, Philip Baker Hall, David Warner and Charlbi Dean, who was the female lead of Best Picture nominee Triangle of Sadness.

No Anne Heche? We honor her passing.

And another extraordinary statistic courtesy of writer and awards specialist Erik Anderson: tonight’s Oscars marks the first time one studio has won all four acting categories, and that studio is relative new kid on the block A24.
A24 wins all four acting categories, a first for any studio in Oscar history

And a quite extraordinary statistic from New York Times critic Kyle Buchanan: Everything Everywhere All at Once is now the film with the most above-the-line wins (meaning the biggest categories) in Oscar history. That’s more than The Silence of the Lambs, It Happened One Night and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, all of which won five above-the-line awards.
With 3 acting wins, plus Best Director and Best Picture, EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE has won more above-the-line Oscars than any movie ever in the 95 years they’ve thrown this show.

While it’s understandably been overshadowed by the wins for Everything Everywhere, All Quiet on the Western Front took home four trophies tonight. That also makes it Netflix’s most successful film at the Oscars.

So as the dust settles on the evening, Tom Murray has gathered together Jimmy Kimmel’s seven best zingers from the night, including his cracks at Babylon’s box office gross and the Will Smith slap row from last year.

This was quite an extraordinary evening in terms of total shut-outs, with Tár, Elvis, The Banshees of Inisherin and The Fabelmans, all of which were widely embraced and received multiple nominations, entirely missing out on wins.
Monday 13 March 2023 03:35 , Adam White
And here is the final tally for this evening...
Everything Everywhere All at Once 7
All Quiet on the Western Front 4
The Whale 2
Avatar: The Way of Water 1
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever 1
The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse 1

“This is history in the making,” Yeoh says at the end of her brilliant speech.
Monday 13 March 2023 03:29 , Adam White
This is historic. Michelle Yeoh is the first Asian woman to win the Best Actress Oscar, and the second woman of colour to ever win the award, following Halle Berry in 2003.

And Best Actor goes to... Brendan Fraser for The Whale !!
Monday 13 March 2023 03:20 , Adam White
If Michelle Yeoh wins tonight, it’ll be Halle Berry handing her the Oscar. Berry, famously, is the only woman of colour to win the Best Actress Oscar... potentially until tonight.
Monday 13 March 2023 03:19 , Adam White
This is an exciting next two categories. First up is Best Actor, which could go to Brendan Fraser or Austin Butler. Then Best Actress, which has been neck-and-neck between Michelle Yeoh and Cate Blanchett all awards season, but seems to be going Yeoh’s way tonight.
Monday 13 March 2023 03:12 , Adam White
This is quite a spectacular sweep for Everything Everywhere All at Once, with almost every other contender struggling to win a single award tonight. Of the three categories left to announce, only Best Actor is Everything Everywhere-less. Surely Michelle Yeoh is taking Best Actress now?
Monday 13 March 2023 03:11 , Adam White
And Best Director goes to... the Daniels for Everything Everywhere All at Once!
Monday 13 March 2023 03:10 , Adam White
Idris Elba and Nicole Kidman next, announcing the award for Best Director. The Daniels have this in the bag, surely?

Monday 13 March 2023 03:06 , Adam White

Monday 13 March 2023 02:43 , Adam White
And the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay goes to... Women Talking! A nice, deserved win for actor turned filmmaker Sarah Polley there.
Monday 13 March 2023 02:42 , Adam White
This feels like a clear path of victory for Everything Everywhere. It feels as if it’s practically a sure-thing that it’ll take both Best Picture and Best Director now.
