2022 OSCARS PREDICTIONS:
BEST ANIMATED FEATURE

UPDATED: Nov 4, 2021

AWARDS PREDICTION COMMENTARY: This week saw the World Premiere of Disney’s 60th animated feature, “Encanto,” and it was truly glorious. From a heartfelt story, bold colors and incredible Latino music, the film could be the spoiler in a race that has been seemingly between Netflix’s “The Mitchells vs. the Machines” and Pixar’s “Luca.” If it becomes competitive in original song, watch out for it in this space as well. Does this put “Raya and the Last Dragon,” the 59th film from March, on the backburner, or can they muster enough goodwill to get both of the compelling movies into the fray?

AFI Film Festival will bring Illumination/Universal Pictures’ sequel “Sing 2” to the conversation, as they hope for a similar reception. However, the first film did miss out on an Oscar nom so let’s see if they’re compelled to make it up to the franchise.

With “Flee” becoming the official submission for Denmark, we have to wonder if the film is nominated in international, documentary and animated, which can it win if any? Could the film even possibly miss out here a la “Waltz with Bashir?” The category is filling out with competition and the animation branch can be more populist than not. That also signals some possible difficulty for GKIDS’ “Belle,” but that studio has many times been a shocking entry in this category, and it would be foolish to think they can’t do it again.

Oscar nominations voting begins on Thursday, Jan. 27, 2022, and will end on Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2022. The official Academy Awards nominations will be announced on Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2022, with the ceremony taking place on Sunday, Mar. 27, 2022.
