OSHA cites Jacksonville roofer for 4th time in 18 months, wants $73K for safety violations

A Jacksonville roofing contractor has been fined $72,683 by the federal government after being cited for job-safety violations for the fourth time in 18 months.

Brayden Roofing Specialists “has shown a clear pattern of willfully disregard for their employees’ safety,” Scott Tisdale, area director for the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration, said last week in an emailed announcement about the fine.

After inspecting a worksite at a home on Heidi Road in Arlington, OSHA last month wrote up the company for safety violations, labeling one “willful” because the agency said employees were allowed to work on 10-foot-high roofs without fall protection that could prevent injuries. The agency also said ladder rails didn’t extend as much as needed to protect employees.

The inspection, which happened in August, was the fourth occasion since May 2022 that OSHA had cited the company at work sites in Jacksonville, St. Augustine and Palm Coast. The company had been told to pay a total of about $47,000 in fines after the earlier inspections but was able to get that total reduced to about $32,000.

OSHA’s announcement about the latest citations said preventing falls is important to keeping workers safe. Out of 1,008 deaths by industry workers since 2020, 351 resulted from falls to lower levels, OSHA said.
